Wow. I didn't realize Ken had moved to Bolivar. Dean, from your directions it sounds like he was probably just a stone's throw from my family's place on Madison St. No news yet on how it fared, of course, but I am anticipating the worst. If anyone gets word of the condition of the Madison St area, c...

I think the Castle Doctrine is a good thing, and I'm proud to have been born and reared in a state as great as Texas that would allow this type of law to stand. I would never ever chastise any Texas resident who used whatever level of force they deemed necessary at the time to protect their property...

I'm going to have to jump on the "Slowride bandwagon" here. I attended his kayak fishing school last week and it was OUTSTANDING. Very much worth the price of admission as they say. Weather you hire him or not, you really shold stop by the shop and meet Dean and Jennifer. They are good peo...

My current line-up of Shimanos include: Calcutta TE 101GT Sustain 4000FE and a Symetre 2500FI. I love them all for what I use them for. I also have a Diawa FuegoL, a Revo Inshore, Revo Premier, and Pfluger President. I like to think of myself as an equal opportunity employer -- if it works and I lik...

I think that it is obvious that there is only one solution to this problem. We need someone to donate the use of about 500 acres of land with the following properties: sandy beachfront, mucky marsh pits, at least one river fording, some rock trails with obstacles such as downed trees, and mountainsi...

The Surf to Summit pictured above by islandspeed is the way to go. When I replaced the factory seat on my Prowler with one it changed my life.

Okay, that may be an exageration, but it really is a great seat.

Centrifugal Reel Brakes

I had someone tell me once (and he was very adament about this) that the centrifugal brake blocks on a reel spool had to be adjusted evenly. That is to say, the blocks directly opposite each other had to be in the same position. If they were not set in the same position, he said it would "off b...

That's a really great idea IMHO.... I, for one, would be so much more likely to remember to do that if everytime I was on the site there was a little non-intrusive link on the corner of the page somewhere that allowed for donations via PayPal. I know I've gotten so used to paying all my bills online...

I'll second the Symetre nomination. I've got a 2500 on a 7' All-Star Moderate Medium (pre-Shakespeare buyout). It's my back-up to my baitcaster setup, or when I want to throw lighter stuff.

I forget what I paid for that reel, 70 or 80 bucks, but it was well worth it.

Woke up early to beat the crowds to Cabela's to chat with Fishman and Slowride. First time meeting either of them and it seems everything I've heard (the good stuff anyway) is true. They both seem like stand-up guys. Went to Slowride's seminar at noon, but had to pull chocks and get to work after th...

From the Falcon website:
"Thank you for purchasing a Falcon rod. We manufacture all our blanks and build the finished rods in the USA."

I would also like to know the names of the guides so I know never to book with them. I think they both hold some level of responsibility here. I know I wouldn't feel obligated to them to protect their identity; I'd be telling everyone I knew to steer clear of them. (Edit): That's more of what I mean...

Haven't fished the Megaforce, but have played around a bit with the Viento, which is a higher-end Daiwa with the Twichin' Bar feature. I actually looked at the Viento to buy for freshwater duty but got talked out of it at Cabela's. Fella there pointed out that it was really kind of gimmicky, and it ...

Reel repair

Can anyone recommend a reputable reel repair shop in the Austin area? A friend of mine who is not a TKF member asked me to ask around. He has a Shimano Stradic that has seen some better days and is need of a rebuild.

Thanks in advance.

I've had my Symetre 2500 for about 2 years now. I mainly use it in the local lakes and rivers on a 7' All-Star medium/moderate with 8lb line. When I take it to the coast as a back-up it sits on a 6'6" MH Team Daiwa and I stick the other spool on with 12 lb Big Game. I have never had a single co...

Have you paddled both yaks, or are you just going off what you've read?

I see you are in San Marcos, you should stop by TG Canoe & Kayak. (www.tgcanoe.com)

They WANT you to try out the boats before you buy, so you get the one that's right for you.

Just a thought......

I'd always heard not to use WD-40 on things like firearms and reels because of its solvent properties. It tends to break down whatever oil/grease was previously used to lube the action, gears, etc..... You then potentially have a gummy mess. And, to continue the trivia......."water displacement...
