My Suunto Altimax of 20+ years just died. So I was wondering what y’all wear for a wrist watch, or if you even do? Also because I want something that will hold up to the riggers of paddling in the salt.

I haven't worn a wristwatch in about 15 years since my cell phone has the correct time all the time. Funny thing is, the only time I think about wearing a watch are when I am fishing and in a casino. But those are also the times I can use "I lost track of time because I didn't have access to my cell phone" for being late.

My Suunto Core Crush crapped out on me earlier this year. Decided on a Garmin Fenix 3, bought a nice one on ebay for $140. It has the features I was looking for, barometer, storm alarm, sun/moon, tides, GPS tracking, etc. I don't really use it synced to my phone for text messages and all that jazz. The GPs tracking is nice when I forget my GPS I can still record my day on the water and import the tracks into Google Earth.

I was wondering about how the gps tracking on those work. I have found myself having a few “senior moments “ in some remote marshes and have been thinking maybe I need to get a gps. I did like the barometer on mine for tracking weather camping etc.

Orient M-Force Auto (+ hand-wind) Power Reserve 200M diver. Mine could use cleaning after 5 years in the salt - may have to take it to my watchmaker.

Twenty-plus years ago, I was sailing the Caribbean, SCUBA diving, lobstering, and racing on sailboats. I had a couple of cheapo watches, which didn't survive. There was a watch industry in St. Croix, basically "screwdriver plants", for tax purposes. A friend managed one, and they made "dive watches". He gave me one, and it lasted a short while, and I went to him and asked what can I buy that will survive? He said: "For your lifestyle, Seiko Dive Watch".

I bought one, and it lasted until the band broke during a dive. Boo! I bought another one, which I still have, and use anytime I'm boating. I've probably had it fifteen years, have put two bands on it, and maybe six batteries. The watch repair guy in St. Croix replaced the first battery, and told me when I picked it up, "Don't get it wet!" DOH!

Anyway, my $275-300 watch is the only thing that ever survived MY lifestyle(including wives). I've replaced the battery myself, probably four times. I've certainly gotten my money's worth with my Seiko dive watch. YMMV!

I have a Samsung watch that is compatible with my cell phone. This way my phone stays in the dry hatch and can answer calls, emails, and texts on my watch. Bit pricey but cheaper than replacing the phone if it gets wet.

I have been wearing a G-Shock watch for several years now and it still works like a charm. It's my daily use watch plus my fishing watch.

I, of course, 'like' my Rolex better. I paid $250 for it in 1974. It's bullet proof. Wouldn't pay what they cost today...,for any watch. Have worn it sense most of the time. Generally wear it when I fish.

The Timex G force exposition I wear when I'm working on things like my car (band is rubber and won't scratch paint, etc.). Timex is electric, the Rolex is chronograph (looses 2 to 4 minutes per yr.). Timex tells better time.

Invicta five watches are my favorite.

My wife has one with a ceramic band.

The only downside is being sure the O-ring is seated perfectly when changing the battery.

I just use my Apple Watch for everything. As mentioned about the Samsung watch, I can take calls and answer texts/emails from it, so my phone can stay in the dry bag.

Before I got my Apple Watch, my go to was a G Shock. Those things are practically bullet proof, and not that expensive.

I wear a stainless Rolex sub mariner with a black face. It’s a classic!

Funny thing is after I declared my Suunto dead I left it open for a couple of days and decided to stick a battery in it one last time. It came back to life! This time I tried to make sure the o-ring was set right but I think it might be one of the buttons. Maybe I’ll get another 20 years? Probably not. I realized that I am just kind of a watch freak (OK my wife reminded me!) I do have an old Timex Spots something, a Seiko Chrono, a Swiss Army, and a Tissot Touch, that all still work! But all of those, except the Timex are my “dress” watches and wouldn’t think of taking them in the salt. And I guess I want something that is just my kayaking and fishing watch. Yes I could use my phone but frankly I don’t like even looking at my phone when I’m fishing, if someone wants me it can wait until I’m done. I usually put it on DND and my wife has a distinctive ring one, or just on airplane mode. So if I want to go cheap I’ll probably just wear the Timex until it dies. But I am also kind of a gadget freak so when that happens I may start drooling over one of the Garmin’s. Unless I hear of something else!

Midway USA has Luminox watches on sale for about 1/2 price ($140). I'm retiring my old Seiko I got from my dad for one of them.

Casio GShock. I’ve been wearing the same one fishing that I acquired in military in 1998. Suunto is great but a handheld GPS makes more sense for beyond time purposes.

I went to Walmart and bought two Timex watches with the largest time display. Each watch is attached in the front of the cockpit. Water proof, cheap, and accurate. Can't ask for more.
