Footwear While in the Kayak

I normally wear Crocs when I'm in my Kayak but lately I've been thinking I should wearing something that offers a little more proteciton. I've been thinking about buying a pair of the Foreverlast Wading Boots just because they have good reviews and are reasonably priced. The ones with stingray protection would also be nice if I decided to wade around a small area.

What do you do for footwear while in the kayak fishing?

Most of the time I wear my wading boots in case I want to get out and wade fish or just walk a little.

Astral Hiyak boots with lycra scuba socks for getting out of the boat.

My review at Moosejaw won me a $250 gift certificate, which I turned into a cot-tent.

My favorite kayak shoes to wear in lake or river aren't made any more, and they came apart on me - they were Chaco sandals with built-in neoprene ankle sock. Gonna be looking.

I wear Magellan brand wading boots I got at academy. They’re comfortable enough and I am morally against crocs, lol

Aqua socks for me. $5-$6 so I don't have to worry about losing them or ruining them. Just something to protect my feet from barnacles and other nasties in case I need to do some wading. Old, clapped out sneakers work just as well.

If it's cold enough that I'm wearing waders while I'm kayaking, I may go with a proper wading boot, and then I miss the days when we could wear felt soled boots without worrying about laws in some areas to prevent the spread of invasive organisms. But even then, if I'm not intending to wade in mud, aqua socks are the easiest.

I wade a lot, because I can’t stand in my kayak and I try and fly fish as much as I can. I have been loving mySoftScience boots. I can wear them by themselves with out sock or with my wading pants in cooler weather. The neoprene tops keep grunge out ant the have held up well to oysters.

I got mine at Academy but it looks like they might be out now. (Like most things)

I almost bought t pair of Soft Science wading boots but the majority of people I heard from said they didn't hold up well against oysters. Good to hear another report that they are holding up well.

umm, if you guys are getting out of the boat in oyster, you may be getting out of the boat in the wrong place.
If you're forced to get out in oyster, you took the boat to the wrong place.
Oyster bottom is also the worst quicksand.

I don't park the kayak in oyster but in some areas where I fish oyster does exist so there's a good chance I can walk over some.

May I ask why just out of curiosity?

I bought them 12 years ago to wear on a canoe trip down the Brazos and have only used them when fishing and considering I lived in West Texas for 4.5 years, they haven't been used much until the last few years.

if you read my review on Moosejaw, I don't like water shoes that don't drain. Why spend all day in your kayak with water in your shoes (rhetorical)

I'm just the opposite. I don't like shoes that drain at least the ones I have experience with. The drain holes are great for allowing water to get out but also allows sand and gravel in which for me is more aggravating than having water in my wading boots. Also I take my wading boots off when my feet get hot and stick my feet in the water so they do air out some throughout the day. Wearing wading boots on the kayak works for me.

I agree with SWfinatic, I've had water shoes with the drains (Columbia) and found they eventually clog and sand & small shells work their way up to and through the foot bed.

I've worn Salomon Crossamphibian for the past 4 years and have really enjoyed them. I also wear mine when light hiking/wade fishing hill country rivers. I wouldn't use them around a bunch of oyster shell though. If I'm in my kayak and know I'm not going to be getting out of it too much I'll wear my Vibram FiveFingers KSO.

I do not recommend Frog Toggs, my third pair has come apart from the sole. All three pair have the same problem with no help from the company that makes these.

When you do step into quicksand with your draining-sole kayak boots, you have to sit on the boat and shake your feet in the water to remove the mud from your shoes, anyway - just to keep the mud out of your boat. The same motion unplugs the boot sole drains.

Ron, did I say I got out of my boat in oysters? But sometimes while wading oysters happen. Unlike you I can’t walk on water and go over them :D

I have a twofold solution to that. I always wear my Ray guards when I know I’m going to be wading, I feel it is cheap insurance and the act as a gaiter in keeping junk out of the tops of my boots. Oh and a third thing is those time when I do sink in the muck, I don’t feel like I’m going to pull my shoe off because they have a strap underneath.

I second those soft science boots. I've got the exact same type and they fit my wide feet.

I do worry about them though wading Oyster, the soles are pretty soft. It's nice though that they zip and clip.

I do get mud or sand in through the drain holes. A little annoying but they were made to take the soles out and clean up easy.

Jerry, that's some weird shit - did I quote you or otherwise call you out?
But do keep in mind, what you're talking about with a fly rod, I was there 30 years ago - long enough it was a different life.
ps - your feet don't look like you've been in quicksand.
I've fished in all kinds of shoes and with friends in all kinds of shoes and all types of bottom, and seen friends come out with bloody feet.
Nor did I saw a word about mud getting in my shoe tops nor leaving a shoe in the mud, because that hasn't happened in 30 years.

Sorry Ron, I guess maybe it was because you posted that RIGHT after In said they held up well in oysters that you called me out.
Is this better? I was trying to show the shoes and the guards.

we're cool - nice fish and serious muck

btw, when FFR did a fly rod species inventory, I could list over 90, and with more thought, that was an abridged list.
Nothing to do with shoes, but discussed this question yesterday on corpusfishing

Why am I against crocs? It's completely irrational, I just dont like them. I dont like anything about them. They're hideous, and just not something I would ever buy. I have no issue with anyone wearing them and I know people love them. That's great, but I'm just not that person.

I'm not that young (40), and I couldnt care less what other people think about my clothing options either. I personally dont like them, and if I dont like something, I'm just not going to buy it or use it.

I understand and I still think they're ugly but I have them. Like I said I bought them 8 years ago because I wanted something that the water would drain out of, float, and have some protection for my feet while going down the Brazos River.
