Oddball Fish Identification Guide Sticky

Post by Reefmonkey »

For all the times someone posts a pic of a lizardfish they caught and asks what it is, we probably need to make a "sticky" of a field identification guide of the lizardfish.

It would probably be a good idea to expand the sticky to provide ids for commonly caught oddball fishes such as searobins, oyster toadfishes, etc. The thread title should be "Before you ask what your freakish-looking catch is, check here."

Add needlefish, ribbonfish, and juvenile lings to the saltwater list. The freshwater list wouldn't be complete without chopique (bowfin, grindle, cottonfish, whatever you prefer to call this virtually inedible but great-fighting denizen of stinky waters).

I would find it helpful to have a good solid guide to small baitfish commonly caught in the cast net in the Gulf; perhaps by season.

I find that many other really solid fisherman really don't have a clue what half of the little suckers are either.

menhaden
bunker
pogies
pinfish
croaker
finger mullet
whiting
perch

are all terms I hear others toss around loosely at times. Thing is this small list comes nowhere near the variety of little guys seen in the net during a busy summer in the surf or at the jetty.
