Threads on the outside of a shotgun barrel?!

So my cousin owns a remington model 11 that he bought used from a guy that modified it. It has some engraving and the tip of the outside of the barrel is threaded. Any ideas on what it is threaded for? Our best guess is that it was for some kind of choke back before chokes were common place.

Seems like a “common” choke back then was the Poly-Choke. My dad’s old Sweet Sixteen and my grandfather’s old Model 11 both have one. I haven’t looked closely in a while and can’t remember for sure, but it might install by screwing over the outside of the muzzle? Perhaps yours was just removed?

...or, maybe it was threaded for some sort of DIY suppressor .

probably an older style of poly-choke.
