Sabinal River Trip
Sabinal River Trip
Headed to this area (near Utopia) in a couple of weeks. Anyone ever fished this area? Any suggestions of artificials that might prove useful. Ill be taking fly rod as well as light spinning/ baitcast. Thanks!
Re: Sabinal River Trip
The Sabinal is mostly clear and shallow, but there are deeper spots. A lot of the Sabinal runs through private land so pick your spots carefully. Utopia has a town lake that's got deep water and you can put a kayak in. Take light tackle, lots of sun fish, small bass, etc. Take pictures and post up here for us.
Re: Sabinal River Trip
I live right down the road from the Sabinal. Despite our recent rains, there are still several spots on the sabinal that are dry. There is water in the Utopia area but keep in mind that several spots went dry this past summer and LOTS of fish died. Some of the bigger holes that managed to keep water still have fish in them but you'll find few long stretches good enough to kayak. Also, while it's a navigable stream and by law you can paddle anywhere, there are several spots with fence or barbed wire stretched across the river with no trepassing signs. I've managed to get pass most of them but they are there. Right now, I'd suggest very light tackle and beetle spins or small grubs.
