Rattle Shrimp
Rattle Shrimp
Yep, it may be a canidate for the ugly fly contest, but I like it.
I've seen a very similar pattern that used mylar tubing for the body. I went a step further and put mylar braid over a rattle. I would have chosen a different or more "shrimpy" color for the legs and tail, but all I had was the chart/black saddle patch. I need sum' mo' souplize.
Yessir,

Yessir,
Your "ugly" fly
You called it that, not I. I like it so well I'll ask a favor...
Either a link to the recipe, or a quick D&D on how you tied it.

Recipe
Thanks for the kind words folks. I cast this shrimp this morning and it had very little resitstence. Like casting a small floating clouser. The only appreciable weight is from the rattle, and that weight is minimal.
"C6" Rattle Shrimp recipe:
Mustad size 4 (long shank) hook: #34011
Mini Fly Rattle
Large mono eyes -black
Poly Flash Braid aka Mylar Flash Braid
Supreme Hair - white and red
Spanflex Medium - ginger
Crystal Flash - silver
Buck Tail - tan
Grizzly Hen saddle patch - chart/bla (may want to use red/bla or pinl/bla)
CTS non-toxic glue
1. Wrap rattle with poly flash braid. I used about 2 inches of braid. Use glue to secure braid to rattle at the start of the wrap and at the end. Leave a small section of braid unwrapped to aid in securing rattle to hook.
2. Tie in eyes just above the hook bend. Tie in some white Supreme hair and the ginger Spanflex in front of the eyes.
3. Tie in red Supreme Hair and a small amount of Crytsal Flash below and behind the mono eyes.
4.Tie in one saddle patch feather behind eyes. Wrap feather forward from the hook shank towards the hook eye. Tie in base of feather at the hook eye. Leave a quarter inch of the feather unwrapped and protruding under and past the hook eye to imitate the shrimps tail.
5. Tie in the poly wrapped rattle on top. Space your wraps to imitate the segmentaion on the shrimp.
6. Tie in buck tail on the bottom of the hook at the hook eye.
7. Cut the whiskers and tail to suit ya'
That's my story and I'm stickin' to it....

Fredtoo,
Thanks for your post and question. I started to write a reply and it made me realize I had reversed a step in the directions (now corrected/edited).
The original version of the fly had some problems with its action and step six of the recipe/detail seemed to fix the issue. The buck tail needs to splay out from where it's tied in below the hook eye to lend some stability. The first couple I tied without the bucktail, were pretty wobbly little buggers. (They definetly wouldn't have passed a field sobriety test. )
I think the best action would be smooth, but short strips. It'll sound the rattle and get all the whiskers going. That said, short quick strips should work as well.

Supreme hair?
Supreme hair? I'll have to check my catalogs for this.
Do you know what I can use as a substitute?

There are plenty of substitutes, if you want to go natural, you could use buck tail. Supreme hair is just another synthetic like 'super hair' or 'ultra hair'. The Cabela's link below is a good picture of a similar product.

Best,
Super hair.
That works. I have some of that stuff, by a different brand name. Now I just have to take time to get back to my "vice"
