Foam Sale at Michaels

I went by Michaels today and they had their craft foam on sale. The door hangers - good for VIP poppers were on sale for $4 for a 9 pack. They also had other craft form half off. I picked up some and have been trying to try the VIP popper. Which also means I am trying to stack deer hair for the first time.

Clay,
If you get a chance, go to The Angler's Edge and watch Rosario spin deer hair. I was there last week and watched her for an hour make deer hair crabs. She makes beautiful flies.

Here is a link that might help with spinning deer hair. I've been trying to get the hang of it lately, but I'm not that great at it yet. There are some other lessons on the site that were helpful too. We need to get some kind of fly tying workshop together.

Looks good. Did you tie that using a piece of the door hangers. I picked a few up a couple of days ago at Wally World along with a few other things. I've only used it to tie a few gurglers so far though.

I just received my order from American Science & Surplus which included Tessel Tiles for tying VIPs. These were recommended in Capt. Sparrow's tying instructions. The package of 150 tiles is an assortment of octagons, squares, and triangles that are 3/16" thick with 3/4" sides in white, red, yellow, blue, orange, and green. All for only $1.75. I'm so un-mechanically inclined it isn't even funny. So, with that note, do any of you folks know if any of these motors would be good drying motors?

I also got a bunch of stuff including a miniature aluminum miter box for only $1.75 that will work great for cutting balsa sticks for poppers. There is enough affordable equipment at AS&S that anyone could start their own weapons program. :wink:

B-Bill,

I bought the 21 rpm, 12VDC motor( http://www.sciplus.com/category.cfm?sub ... tegory=172 ) along with a 12 VDC adapter, and hope to be able to figure out the right resistance to put in-line to slow the motor down to the 7-12 RPM range.

I think this is the same motor that Goin Coastal is ordering (21 rpm 12vdc). When it arrives I will post what you need to slow it down for drying epoxy etc if you would like.

Yes, I believe that is the same one that Joe was going to order. Please do post that information on slowing it down, I would really appreciate it! The DC power supply that I ordered at the same time has an output of 12V 200 mA. Thanks!

Most flies seem to evolve over time. It usually is a matter of getting it down to the basics of what works for that fly and cutting out the extras. It makes them easier to tie. For a guy like Sparrow who has clients using his fly it means less time on the vise to keep his supply up. The VIP is a prime example. I have one that Sparrow tied two years ago. It is alot more full and fluffy with a sequin at the nose. The latest versions are more sparse and without the sequin. The current version casts easier in the wind and seems to be just as appealing to the fish. KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid)

I ordered the 21rpm 12VDC motor. I did not get a AC Adapter tho. I plan on using an old computer power supply..... I wonder since the motor has no load when drying flies if the 5VDC out of the computer power supply wont do the trick.... I will find out soon enuf cuz the motor should be here late this week or first of next week............

I will let you know how it goes..............

Hey tkfclay, Capt. Sparrow tied and gave me a VIP at the shallow water show last year.. I have been tying copies of it ever since. Had monumental luck this past summer and fall with it behind Galveston State Park. Cought my lifetime fly rod record trout with it. definately my go -to fly now.
Had much trauma trying to spin deer hair until I watched the young lady doing it at Anglers Edge. No sweat when you do as she does.
