Reason for big tires is part loose sand float ability, and I could use my jeep spare for both. Big used mt tires aren't too expensive, and fairly abundant in jeep circles, a set of four 39.5's for $80 on cl recently. Oh, and they're cool...
Sorry for the late response!
The hubs are 3500 lb hubs w/ 5 on 5 bolt pattern (hard to 5x5 in anything smaller), to match the JK. The wheels were hub-centric wheels from a commander (also 5 on 5), so they had to be machined to accept the larger hubs.
The trailer is designed to carry 300# load - since we're talking offroading, everything is made to 10x load rating - so 3k lbs minimum, including springs. This adds a lot of bounce, I'm going to start a nose box out of steel, and have several batteries up there soon for surf fishing, which will help with the handling (it does bounce a lot, even with 8lbs of pressure in the tires).
The axle is made by sleeving a 1.5" DOM with 2" DOM tubing. This was mostly an oversight, we would've originally gone with 2" DOM with a fairly thick wall, but opted to start with 1.5" DOM to keep the weight at a minimum, and that failed, so we just sleeved with 2"/.25 wall tubing.
I needed a couple of new tires on the jeep, so I just used two take-offs for the trailer =)
BTW, your trailer turned out pretty rockin =) I like it alot! I've been planning on getting a welder and skinning it in w/ expanded metal too - may actually get to that this summer.
