Those look great especially the one on the bottom. It has the look of a great skinning blade. Excellent looking knives

Looks good. I've got a few old farrier rasps I need to turn into some knives one of these days.

I have been working on a few of those myself over the last few weeks! What did you use for the handles, is it cedar or mesquite?

Handles are ceder , I cut some trees a few years back and they have been stored in a building curing , I cut the slabs out of that wood.

Re: Another not a boat
Well, it is still a building forum even if it is a "not a boat".
So are you going to give us anything more than the damn tree the handles come from?
I'd sure like a rundown on the steel working. Old file? tempering, untempering, retempering?
Come on man give up the skinny.
Oh, I do like the knives

Moder
Your a trip
The 440 c is some knife building stock that a friend gave me ,it was already annealed (softened) I ground the blade out to shape drilled the holes for the handle slabs.
Then I did a little rigging ,I have an old hibachi that is cast iron ,built my charcoal fire in that set a hair dryer blowing into the coals, that brought the temp up to a stage where it is anti magnetic , then did just an edge quench for 15 seconds and the a full quench for 45 sec in cooking oil. After it cooled all the way I put it in the oven for 1 hour at 400 degrees to finish tempering it and the let it cool on its own .
I then finished the blade polished it and put on and shaped the handles .
Whewwww ok you happy now.

Re: Another not a boat
Thanx Ron, I knew there was a little more to it than just pretty handles.
Ron has been welding since before they invented electricity so I wanted to drag out some of that sperience for us young guns.
I could take what I know about steel and poke it in your eye, and you would never know something was in there.
