Day Trip and campground camping 9/12 &13

Post by Randy »

I have been planning all week to go somewhere and paddle my new Necky, with the intentions of camping on a river someplace. But the weather has made me modify plans.

So, now it will be just a day trip, and paddle back to the camp ground. Hope to be in the water by around 10:30 thismorning. I figured we would stay in protected water, and stay at an established camp ground for the night.I'll turn the SPOT on when we hit the water.

After watching the weather all week, FireFly49 and I changed plans at the last minute, at first we were going to go over to the Brazos, but with the forecast, we changed and decided to go someplace where there were more people, (just in case the weather turned to crap) and someplace different. This area is known for it's White Bass fishing , specialy in or around February, and year round catfishing.

After a late Friday evening phone call, we decided on Harmon Creek, just outside of Huntsville. We got to the Harmon Creek Marina and were greeted by the owner, (man he is a talker),

The campground was very nice, the tent sites had electric, clean bathrooms and showers, waterfront sites, there was RV sites for the big boys and they even had little cottages for rent.

The Owner was very KAYAK FREINDLY, although he is not a kayaker, he felt us out, to see if we knew what we were doing and gave some great tips on places to go in a kayak. AND... I need to pass on, he made it clear, that he does not charge to launch a kayak, as long as you don't have to use the boat ramp.....

The tent site fee is $17.00 a night, with electric, and water. The whole place was Family Friendly, there wasn't any rowdy folks, it was clean, it had a full blown playground for the young kids, swing, slide and all kinda climbbing stuff, bank fishing, and a swimming pool, for those that need clear water.

OK, after visiting, we had to hit the water,,, even though it was lightly raining, we geared up and headed out,
the first leg was down Harmon Creek, past the 980 bridge, then the water opened up and there were several little islands, that had camping potential, As we paddled toward the Trinity River, we met several folks as die hard as us out in the rain, mostly catfishermen.

All the property along the way is either privately owned or owned by the Prison System. All those little islands out on the open area are under the Trinity River Authority.

We went down to the RR track just south of HWY 19 approx 9 miles round trip.

We finished up the weekend with a mile and a half paddle up Harmon Creek till we ran out of water, The marina operator said this is a kick butt area for white bass later on. In some areas the water was clear enough we could see the catfish , turtles and carp swimming below. The best part, is the water is pretty shallow, and the PB nuts can't get up there.

Wow, what another great weekend.

Wow, wish I had known about the trip earlier, but would not have done me any good. Caught some type of bug and have been laid up since last Tuesday. Real kick butt bug. Looks like an area I need to try out real soon. Just post up the specifics on it.

This is definitely another new favorite place to return to!!!! Everything you want is right there in one spot....camping, fishing, & exploring the creek, river or open water. For those wanting to introduce wives/girlfriends to the outdoors the amenities are perfect.....cabins with back porches to read & relax on, swimming pool, and playground for the kids.

Here are some photos of the campground and the Sunday morning paddle on Harmon Creek

I don't see how I missed this topic and subsequent thread. Great photos. Looks like a real nice place and I'm not a fan of freshwater places, but this place caught my eye.

BTW, what brand and model is the green composite yak shown in the photos? How long, wide and how much does it physically weigh?

Randy's falling down on the job, Nightwing ... if I'm correct, it's a 14' Necky Zoar Angler, 25", 57#. It's a nice looking ride with all the bells and whistles and I enjoyed the test drive I had in it very much..

Chrsryse, the cabins in the pic's are new....they run $99/Fri & Sat nights and sleep 4. They have 3 older cabins...I'm not sure on the price $69? 79?, and sleep 6. The RV sites are $30, camping area $17 and no charge for putting in kayaks if you don't use the boat ramp.....otherwise, it's a whole $3.
