After the fantastic time I had on the Colorado with everyone I figured I would invite TKFers on my next trip. It will be arrive at Morgan Shady camp ground on Fri. Aug. 6, Used to be Sonny's will pick us up there Sat. morning and take us to the 2nd crossing. Float and fish about 8 miles, make camp. Sun do another 8 ish miles to the campground and head home. I have reservations for 6 as of now, but can adjust as needed.

If anyone is interested.

Put me down as a possible, but give us a hint as to were this camp ground is. What kind of water are we facing in terms of rapids and depth of rapid or shoal areas?

Sorry. It is a super clear shallow river with holes. Lots of gravel bars may be some short (15 ft) drag your boat depending on your boat and load. Not labor intensive at all. The camp ground is just above the city dam. here is a link to the campground http://www.morganshadypark.com/

here is the link for the trip on south west paddler http://southwestpaddler.com/docs/llano3.html

I personally have not done this whole stretch of river, just the last part from the state park to Morgan shady grove. I have a couple of friends who have though.

As for rapids most of them I have done standing in my stealth. Nothing like the upper guad.

here are a few pics from last Nov.

I would love to go on this one, but don't know if I can or not. it sounds like a beautiful trip!!

And, I loved the picture. Anyone who kayaks with their dog is okay in my book!! Looks like a beautiful and very interested German Shorthair. Great, highly intelligent breed!!

I don't know Ray. It looks might clear! I am sure a fly fisherman witha little imagination could imagine he was on the Blackfoot or Clarks Fork rivers.

It is quite the fly fishing destination. From what I hear anyway.

Wish I could go, y'all are killing me with all these overnighters, just when I've become a new papa! I've floated and camped this stretch quite a bit. The South Llano is about as good as it gets. Crystal clear water, beautiful scenery, and great fishing. As Weird One says, it is a great flyfishing river. Lots of spotted bass, perch, some decent largemouth, and a very good catfish population. You're going to have a great time! Look forward to the reports.

You use your solo canoe? I am debating on mine or maybe go light with my featherlite.

The overnight trips I've done there have been in my T120 and a tandem canoe, have only done a little bit of paddling on the South Llano in my Vagabond. But your Pack would definitely work very well. You'll be doing some portaging, and dragging, so the light weight of the canoe will be a real plus. I did the Great Castell Kayak race last month, on a stretch of water which is pretty similar to the one you'll be doing, and the solo canoe was perfect. Either boat should work well, I'd say it's a matter of preference as to which you'd rather paddle. But I definitely recommend packing pretty light.

Can't recall that I've encountered many mosquitoes on this river. There may be a few, but I wouldn't expect many.

Looking at that water I am guessing that is light and ultra light tackle water. Correct?

Definitely, though I've actually fished the South Llano almost exclusively with a flyrod. Poppers and wooly buggers will catch anything, for those who are using the long rod. With spinning tackle, try roadrunners and beetlespins. I've also caught decent bass on senkos. There are some big bass in this river, so don't be afraid to try larger finesse baits. Just use very fine diameter line. If you camp near any deeper holes, you might put out some trotlines or jugs, there are some very nice cats in this river.

These two were caught on 12 lb line bait casters the one on the left with a soft plastic fluke, and the one on the right on a 1/4 oz jig with a craw trailer.

You guys mind if a new bee comes along. I just moved back to Texas a couple of weeks ago and I need someone to show me the ropes in this area. I've been kayak fishing for a few years now, but I have never gone on a over nighter. The trip sounds like a good one, and I love to bass fish.
