Horspen Bayou Drifting

Have not done much RR fishing this winter, me and Goose decided to go after some blues. Saturday was a perfect day to be on the water. We launched from Bay Area Park and made the paddle over to Horsepen. I was the first to hook on a nice little 3lb blue and shortly after I got another. When I got this one in the boat I noticed a sore on it then noticed something sticking out of the sore. I figured what the heck and pulled it out, it came out freely but was hard. At first I thought it was a stingray barb then upon closer inspection it was the lower jaw bone of a long nose gar. This thing was sticking out both sides of the fish  . I decided that fish survived like that for no telling how long, so I figured I would let him live and turned it loose. I few minutes later I was hooked up again and Goose was getting frustrated. Then Jim hooks up on a nice blue but it comes unbuttoned at the boat. Then he gets a biggin. His PB blue on rod and reel. The fish was somewhere around the 17lb mark. Since I have the bigger yak I end up carrying all of the fish as he was putting the fish into my yak the fish had other plans and made its escape. In all we caught 8 fish but only kept 4. Now for the pictures.

My new rigging.

You and Jim are the some of the best catfishermen in this area. I guess those of Jim's that came unbuttoned just didn't want a snow cone in the winter!!! :D :D :D

You guys keep it up, I love your trips and reports.

Yes indeed ...both umbrells work as sails, rain deflectors & shade give'ers and when it's Texas 100+ the latter is most enjoyable

Yes and Now. I use a carolina rig with a 12 to 18 inch leader and a 5/0 hook with a 1oz egg weight. What I find that works best is if you move slow enough that your bait hangs straight down.

that middlebrook launch under the bridge seems like a tricky spot with the steep bank.

Its not bad if you dont mind smearing mud all over your stuff. Actually it does suck. Its muddy and the bank is pretty steep. Plus you never know who will show up down there to smash your window in.

I have been under middlebrook on both sides. I wouldnt recomend launching from the muddy side unless you have 4x4 or its realy dry, the other side I have been down in 2 wheel drive you just gotta be careful and know what your doing. Deffinitely take personal and prized belongings with you or leave them at home because like mentioned above you may come back to your vehicle being broken into.
