Galveston surf

My son and his friend have been kayaking the surf lately. The other day they were hitting 4+ foot breakers in a tandem Pelican just having fun. Yesterday evening, the surf was relatively flat and they wanted to try fishing it at the line where the dirty water comes clean. So they paddled out and started trolling large silver spoons. Oddly, they caught two HUGE gaftops. Not quite CCA big, but roughly 4-5 pounders.
While they were off doing that, I stood at the second sandbar and threw into the gut between the second and third bars and managed to pick up 16 and 18 inch specks. I also had two solid runs on fish that ended up cutting through my 20lb leaders. One ran like a spanish mackerel. Not sure about the other. Surprised at smacks being in so close but it didn't take long for it to cut the line. Maybe a small shark. Whatever they were, they are hanging out now with Vudu shad hanging out of their lips. One a greenback and the other a white one.
