Tiki Island Fishing Report 5/8

Post by jonathan.nesby »

Headed down to Tiki Friday night to try my luck on some nighttime reds and trout around the green lights. Paddled out to the westernmost canals on the north side of the island and had little luck fishing the surface lights and the few underwater green lights in the no-wake zone on the north side of the island. The wind was howling about 15-20 from the SSE so I headed into the canals to try and find some shelter from the wind and some hungry fish.

And boy did I find them! Some of the back canals were loaded with bait and stumbled into some schools of glutenous trout. Throwing a 3 1/2" DOA Glow/Chart Tail got slammed by a 24" trout. This action kept going for an hour or so. Ended up landing limits of redfish and trout but only kept a few.

It's hard to beat nighttime kayak fishing like that.

nice, indeed.
Yes, the wind is going to beat the bait into the canals, and hungry fish will be there with them.
Our drill this Thursday has a similar element. The combination of NE wind with outgoing tide creates an eddy that traps the bait in the cut.

Great report and thanks for posting. I went out that night as well and tried to get my son to go to Tiki but he hates it over there and prefers Sea Isle because it is so well lit. We ended up with a bunch of rat reds and dink trout mostly. A couple of legal specks caught and released.

Thanks for the great report, Mr. Nesby. A fine first effort, indeed. And your fishing skills are clearly beyond reproach.

Jon invited me to go that night and I counseled him to stay home because of the howling winds...

Boy, was I wrong! He outfished the whole Hobie Navy. Now we hope you'll join us on our next trip.

Nightfishing for me is usually "feast or famine." The bait & gamefish are in those lights OR not. You had a feast out there.

We'll see you soon on the water.
