Somerville Report/white bass

Post by ggofish »

Took the AI to Somerville after lunch and hammered the larger whites to 6-7 lbs. I filled my 48 qt. cooler in 3.5 hours trolling gold and shad rattle traps in 20' water @ 4-5 mph. It got gusty around 3:00pm and the AI handled great! Tight lines....Image

Nice fish gg but I think those bigger ones are hybrids cross between a white and a striper or else you may have a new record WB :cat:

Nice stringer, looks like you had a blast.

Don, I was thinking the same, they look more like stripers as whites are usually pretty small.

Yea, Forgot to say Hybrids...my bad. The whites were there too. Sorry for the mix up on that...blond moment on that one. Everything white was hitting fast and hard. Small stripers were caught too, but no size to them.

That looks like it was fun...Love my PA, but wonder if I can talk my wife into getting an AI (been out on them a couple of times and they are sweeeeeeeet).

Whites and Stripers are nice, but when one of those big hybrids hit, you better be holding on. Seen more than one rod jerked out of the hands while people were catching whites.

5 beautiful hybrids definitely!

Hey gg, I have a hobie revo with a sail (haven't sailed it though), it might not be as fast as the AI, but if you want to go fishing together eventually on lake somerville, just PM me. There is no much going on on our local chapter (Brazos Valley TKF). It used to have some outings, but now it has dimmed...

Anyways, good report! And congrats on the meat haul!

Yea, the Hybrids and Stripers to 20 lbs are a lot like King fish when they hit! I'm only using medium spinning tackle 12 lb test while doing this at Somerville. When I go after the big Stripers...I use 555 pen gls series mounted on a tiger rod strapped with 40 lb. That's the rig I use when chasing the kings and sharks offshore and it helps swoop the heaver fish on the tramps on the kayak with the heavier line. The Scotty mount rod holders can take a beating all day long along with the custom roll bar firmly attached with 6oo lb stainless steel aircraft cable and PVC pipe roll bar....It's rigid! I designed the roll bar rod system to drag sharks to wear them out using the peddle system....and it works!

How are the water levels over in Somerville? I am planning to maybe plan a camping trip up there.

There is a little cove of protected water at Welch Park close to the main hill of the park facing the dam.

Beautiful catch; looks like you had a great day. Thanks for the report; though I will likely never fish Somerville, it's fun to see these reports. Well done!

Hey ggofish, how did you do this weekend? I used to get some hybrids close to the dam at somerville, but it was at least 3 years ago. I haven't been many times out there from that time, but probably I haven't caught any hybrids anymore since then.

I go where the Stripers go. Right now they are right in front of the hill at Welch park 100-200 yards working the underwater humps. I have also caught them in the middle of the lake too. Bring 3/4oz and 1oz "gold" Ratt-L-Traps...You will killem!! Piiiisssss...Paint the tail and underbelly of the rattle traps with red nail polish...but don't tell nobody....ok?...Ha!...That's a hint! I will post 2 days before I go, but not Saturday or Sunday this weekend. Tight lines...GGOFISH

Just incase I can go...Sunday afternoon is a maybe. Reason for the nail polish on the traps...It works. Paint a trap and catch a fish and see where the trap got hit....odds are....RED! I also heard of Striper catches with live Crawfish too going on out there as well! If I had a craw trap...I would use it.
