CLC Kaholo 14 Build Ready for Water!

Post by MR2brad »

Well, I haven't started building it yet, but I have ordered the plans, and will hopefully be working on it some through the end of the semester.
This weekend I decided to build a paddle while I wait for the rest of my materials. Went and grabbed some cedar, and came up with this.

Bird mouth joints. This was my first time doing this, and it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

Image

Rough shape of the handle.

Image

Strip paddle clued, and cut out. Thickness ranging from 1/2" in the middle to 1/4" on the edge.

Image

Image

Cut the shaft at a 10 to 15 degree angle.

Love the wood grain.

And this is where I stop for now.

Hopefully there will be some more updates in the next couple weeks.

Thanks for looking, and any input would be great.

The plans came in today. Unfortunately I'm still searching for some plywood to use. Seems the thinnest I've been able to find is some 5mm stuff at Lowe's. Apparently no one carries 3/16 or 1/8 when you are in need of it.

Anyone know if I would be able to get enough flex out of 5mm to get the panels together?

All I have ever used is the 5mm luan from home depot. I have alway been able to torture it into place.

Awesome, good to hear.
You're jem paddle board build is partially why I want to build this. Seems like a much more fun way to be on the water.

Also, I got some epoxy and fiberglass today. Can't wait to start.

I am the Same as Neon ,most of my boats are built from box store ply , just make sure you seal it inside and out with epoxy and glass.

Picked up 4 sheets of 5mm lauan yesterday, and started the intense game of connect the dots.
The plans that I got look a little bit different than some of the plans that I have seen from different builds on the internet.
My plans only give you one side of the deck, and hull, where the ones I've seen give you both sides. No big deal though. Just a little trickier to get everything lined up right.
Going to try and work on this as much as I can in between working on my senior design engineering project. Probably should have waited to start this until the end of the semester, but sometimes if just can't help myself.

Worked on it a little bit on and off this weekend. Managed to get everything but the sides transferred and cut out. I'm going to scarf the side pieces before cutting out the shape to make sure it doesn't go crooked.

Parents are out of town, so I used the dinning room for pattern transfer.

So many dots to connect..

Flattening out the paper.

Image

Made sure the paper was stretched nice and tight over the wood.

Image

Used a sabre saw to cut out the centers and rough cut the pieces, then finished them on the table saw. Thank god for spindle sanders for those inside bits.
Its too bad they will never be seen again once the deck is attached.

Bottom of hull.

Deck.

Just about ready to start scarfing and stitching.

You officially tortured the crap out of wood! Let it sit overnight and it will be easier to fine tune tomorrow. Remember it doesn't have to be perfect. Filleting and sanding will make everything blend together. Your doing a great job on this, really looking good.

Looking very good. My son wants one of these really bad.

I have a question about your paddle shaft. How do you make the V-groove at the bottom of the cedar strip? What tool do you use?

Thank you. For the grooves I used the table saw with the blade set at a 45 degree angle.
I got the basic info for building it here: http://ngc704.home.comcast.net/~ngc704/paddles/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Managed to get most of the fillets done today.
One thing that I found out today is that my epoxy is a 3:1, where when I asked my friend I bought it from he said it was a 2:1.
At least I haven't used too much of it yet. Might have to send $20 to get a little more hardener in the future, but no big deal.

Getting a little closer.

Image

Carry handle support and also added some extra support for where I'm thinking I want to tie down a cooler for fishing.

Image

Nose block.

And a couple more pictures.

Planning on leveling out the top, and applying a coat of epoxy to the inside later today.

Haven't done all too much lately, just some little bits before attaching the deck to the hull.
Also came up with a design to put on the stern thanks to google and photoshop.
It will be done with mahogany veneer that we've had out in the garage forever.

Got a little creative this evening and drew up a design for the deck. Also planning on transferring it onto the mahogany veneer.

Thank you, sir. Trying to make it a little different than most of the ones that I have seen on the web.

Managed to glue down the deck today. I had a plan to get it done without any help, but it was still much harder than I thought it would be. I almost had everything lined up perfectly, and then the deck ended up touching down when i was still about an inch off in both directions. Oh well. I hope it didn't wipe away all the epoxy and will still have decent adhesion.

This morning I trimmed the deck overhang. Used a router for the bulk of it, and finished it with a belt sander.
There were a few gaps where there wasn't as much epoxy as I would have liked, but that alright.
I went a head and mixed some epoxy/wood four filler up, and used a zip lock, pastry bag style, to run a bead in the gaps.
Also used a bunch of it to fill in the tail area.
