400 lb mono

Post by Fish soup »

My neighbor just gave me a big roll of 400 lb mono and a nice crimping tool. He fishes for tuna, marlin etc.
I have only used wire leaders and was wondering how well this stuff would work for king leader material. This stuff is seriously strong.

Not sure about kings but it is USUALLY good for sharks and BRs.

My last trip to HI my 5-6ft 400# mono leaders were SHREADED by larger sharks. (mind you even 7-8ft wire leaders were no match for a tail slap to the 30-40# main line)

My understanding is that kings have pretty keen eyesite and the lighter Malin wire with small (but strong spro swivels) is the way to go.

Sometimes it will work, sometimes they will slice right through it. There will be times that you will get your line back and it will b shredded but not bit through. Steel is the way to go if you are looking to land the fish and not lose your lure. I have landed plenty of Wahoo, tuna and kings on 60 lb fluoro but there is a lot of luck that goes w that. Imagine pulling the mono tight and sliding a razor blade over it. It might not pop on the first pass but a few passes later, the line will be shredded. Now take a steel wire and do the same it can be light wire... Take ten passes on the wire and see what happens. The wire wins the battle, the mono loses.
I use fluoro for tuna fishing and have caught tuna to 142# on 60 lb fluoro, 400 would be over kill and you might not get a bite. Tuna can be picky. That 400 would be best used trolling

400 lb mono wouldn't be my choice for Kings...............too visible. It works ok with sharks unless they swallow the bait deep and can get their teeth on the mono............like anything, once they get their teeth on it, it is easily chewed through.

id stick to piano wire for kingfish leaders

ive never had anything bite through my 400# mono leaders, i also use circle hooks which set themselves in the corner of the mouth every time, so i dont have to worry about much chewing from the toothy critters.

Piano wire works? Where can I get some from? Any general size?

sorry by piano wire im talking about the "tooth Proof" stuff you get form academy. just make sure your haywire twists are good and take your time. Just an FYI the thing diameter wire will not stop a shark from biting right through it.

i just trebles on mine, even though everyone says its not necessary, when they chomp down on those suckers there's no getting away.
