DIY PVC ROD HOLDER FOR ANY KAYAK
DIY PVC ROD HOLDER FOR ANY KAYAK
So i wanted to increase my Rod holding Capacity on my Jackson Big Tuna. I looked up several great DIY setups. Most use the existing rod holders and bridge the two and add 3 spots. I didn't like this because then I would have to park my boat or disassemble/remove my rod holder to access the rear hatch on my BT. Here is what i did. I took 1 1/2 inch PVC pipe, a T connector and a 4 way connector and i made two Rod holders per side. In hind site I could have used just two T connectors per side instead of one 4 way. I can rotate them out or close in and i can carry 4 Rods plus the Ram Rod mount for the Wife up front. I plan on painting them with Truck bed liner. Lemme know what you think.
PVC Lengths for one side
1, 9 inch piece of PVC with 2, 4 inch cuts length wise on the bottom half of the pipe
2, 2 inch pieces of PVC for the tops of the Rod holders and 1, 3 Inch piece of PVC for the bottom
1, 1 5/8 inch of PVC for the connecting joint.
Repeat for the second one

Nice and simple. You probably did not needed the extra PVC protruding from the 4 way PVC. Now just put some black paint and it will look like a pro addition to the yak.
I might copy your design for BTB. Remember to put a leash on those rods to ensure you don't loose them in a flip or a big fish pulling your bait.

The Extra PVC stem inserted into the four way closes the circumference a 1/4" making it a better fit for the rode handle also the length secures the rod better all depending on how fast you need to unload. I learned that the hard way out on the water when my pole flew outta the holder. Had the leash tho. Good job WesCmpg2yahoo wrote:Nice and simple. Very nice set up
Re: DIY PVC ROD HOLDER FOR ANY KAYAK
Look good, but how do you keep them from rotating (turning).
God bless,

Take a heat gun and use a beer bottle to push into the top and flare them so you dont tear your cork up, works great
Re: DIY PVC ROD HOLDER FOR ANY KAYAK
I so dig it! I must jack this idea, which is the point, but overall nice! Tight lines to you.

Thanks guys! so far ive been out twice with them and they dont turn at all. that said i was just using them to hold my rods no trolling with them yet. Hind site being 20/20 i wish i had sanded the inside of the pipes before gluing them in place just to preserve the cork on the rods. It's not an issue yet but there is potential to damage the cork. I like the Beer bottle idea to open up the mouth ill have to do that then paint and post some updated pics.

Instead of using the 4-way, would it be possible to just use another 3 way and not have the extra protrusion that isn't doing anything?

I do believe so. I will be building this set up tomorrow. very nice set up probably the best I have seen. There are some that look like they belong on a battle ship instead of a kayak. lol But this one is simple an just what I need. thanks wesc for posting this.

Here is my version I added a cross section. This is just the first mock up. I still need to buy the joint for the cross section, so I can screw on a light pole. Think I will paint it a sand/flat dark earth color.
I used all t joints didnt quit turn out how I envisioned. I ran into problems an had to get creative with the joints I bought. Materials used 6 T joints, and 2 -1 1/4- 24 inch pieces of PVC. I also had to do two cuts in the PVC pipe about 6 to 7 inchs long to get the PVC to fit in my rod holders and it was still a very tight fit. I have two rods that will be held sorta out to the sides(heaviest rods) and two on top that will be held toward the back. I doubt I will ever carry four rods but it is nice to be able too if needed. I didnt use the 45 or 90 joints I bought doing so would have raised the unit well above seat height which I did not wont.
Question What height are you guys installing ur 360 lights at?
Also have you guys noticed how home depot and lowes carry different stuff. I swear every time, I do something one will have every thing except one item. So today I left lowes with intentions of buying all the stuff at home depot. They had everything but one item. So I left home depot cussing heading back to lowes.LOL And still forgot the center joint.

Finished except for putting stainless screw in some of the sections to hold it together. It is together pretty tight as is. I ran out of pvc glue. I tried to match the magpul flat dark earth color. This is close it is krylon for plastic from walmart. The top of the light pole from the black hatch cover is 4' 2" about the same size as yak attack pole. The launchers are not all the way in the rod holders just stuck them in for pics. The top bar will be right at the top of seat.
Painted my FF mount board the same color. I really dont like how the board turned out size wise may redo it. Mounted the extra wire in a mag pouch I had and riveted it to a water proof plano case which is bolted to the board. Still working on the deployment arm for transducer.

Re: DIY PVC ROD HOLDER FOR ANY KAYAK
UPDATE!!
I have used them a few more times and i still dont have any issues with them turning but i do wish i had a bout another 2 inched in between the holders. they are a little close and the reels touch. no damage just can be a few more second fiddling around grabbing a Rod.

That's some nice engineering. Gave me some ideas
Re: DIY PVC ROD HOLDER FOR ANY KAYAK
Thanks Zman for the offer but I am in a holding pattern to any further mods/rigging. I have a major issue with my Pescador and it is currently being hashed out between academy and confluence. It doesnt look good, very good possibility, I am stuck with a unusable kayak. $500 down the drain.
Re: DIY PVC ROD HOLDER FOR ANY KAYAK
Looks good. What issue are you having with your Pescador? I have two and I am curious. I hope all works out okay.

Wow! sounds like the thinner plastic gave way. Was it in the seat area? Or scupper area? I have heard issues there.Newt556 wrote:Thanks Zman for the offer but I am in a holding pattern to any further mods/rigging.
