Gear trac on hobie outback
Gear trac on hobie outback
Has anyone installed the 8" gear trac to the front of their outbacks right in front of the molded in rod holders? if so can you post pics and tell me how you like it so far.. Getting my 2015 soon and doing a few upgrades and gear tracs are really what im looking into
Re: Gear trac on hobie outback
I installed the 8inch GearTracs on my new 2015 Outback. I also installed them behind the rear rod holders as well. I debated using the narrow tracs, but I like the strength of the GearTracs. They fit fine in both locations.
I have not had a chance to get it out on the water yet - hopefully the weather this weekend will be good.
I'll post pictures of the complete rigging shortly, but here are photos of the 8inch GearTracks installed front and rear.

Re: Gear trac on hobie outback
that looks awesome! yea I wana do the exact same thing to mine. I was considering putting the 4" ones in the back but looking at yours Im leaning toward just putting 8s all around. Thanks for the reply!
Re: Gear trac on hobie outback
Glad this helped. I installed 4-inch GearTracs in the front of my old Outback. They work fine, but when I was rigging out my new 2015 Outback, I wanted the 8-inch instead for the front & back to give me more flexibility and mounting options. It fits just fine and can use the Hobie Rod Holder without any problem in the back.
I usually have a Ram mounted rod holder(s) in the front, but the rear tracs will allow me to use them to toll in deeper water if I want.
BTW, I was concerned that the screws might interfere with the rudder system wires, but there is ample clearance and should not be a concern.
I bought my Outback from ACK at the Boat Show and with with %15 off of accessories too, I decided to just go for it all and use the 8-inch tracs all around.

Re: Gear trac on hobie outback
imabass are those riveted in? Im planning on going that route but I prefer to use nuts and bolts. but when I installed my zig zag cleat next to the bigger cup holder (right side) I couldn't reach nor my brother so I had to get the longest arm friend I knew to help me install it.
Re: Gear trac on hobie outback
Yea I too got mine at ACK boat show! Quick question are the hobie accessories 15% off as well? because normally they aren't Yea I was actually worried about hitting the wiring for the rudder while drilling the holes for the trac. Yea with the discount im gonna use the extra cash to get the rectangular hatch, anchor trolley and upgraded rudder along with the tracs =)

About the GearTrac installation - I did not use rivets or bolts/nuts. The gear tracks come with screws and a drill bit that I used to drill the holes and then just applied some marine goop in the holes and hand tightened them into the kayak. There is no give and are very secure. This is what YakAttack recommends. Here's the instructional video link:

The screws just barely came out on the underside of the kayak. I guess you could use bolts and nuts if you like. You can easily reach there to hold the nut. I will have to look again if there is clearance for the anchor line with a bolt/nut. I don't think it should be a problem, but the screws are plenty strong.
I'm out this weekend, but will try to see if I can get a picture of the underside and post on Monday.

Re: Gear trac on hobie outback
Exciting!!!! Can't wait for the spring weather!
The H-Crate looks sweet. I got a blackpack some time ago. I like it because of the lid, just in case something bad happens. It is a little big but will carry all my stuff.
