Fishing From a all inclusive resort in Mexico?
Fishing From a all inclusive resort in Mexico?
Anybody ever thought about taking fishing poles to an all inclusive resort vacation and fishing off the beach while everyone else is sipping mojitos?
I'm going to Azul Fives in Playo de Carmen in July for my wife's friends wedding and I'm not too excited about spending that much money to go to a wedding. I did see that they have kayaks at the resort for guests to use so if I take my fishing poles I could go out and fish the deep water ledge that is pretty close to shore from what I hear.
What do yall think? Has anyone ever done this? Should I jig off the bottom? What type of lures should I get? Any thoughts

I know a guy who did this from a Florida resort. He used a collapsible pole and took some of the seafood from dinner for bait. He was catching Mangrove snapper, Macks, and small AJs. I say go for it! If all else fails, just tip the kayak guy to see if he can source some fishing gear for you.

I say do it take a travel rod and reel, and when not sure what to use gulp always works maybe even take a pack of shrimp fishbites.

DC. Check out a site called locogringo.com. Do a search or post up there. Someone may be able to offer up additional information.
I will definitely be looking into it next time we go down.
Head South and have cocktails/lunch at Casa Cenote and swim in the Manatee Cenote off the back of the property.
Lot of fun.
Have a great trip.

The clear as gin beach front water is teaming with fish all along the 'Mexican Riviera". I have caught bonefish, tarpon, permit, mangrove snapper, jacks (a pain in the butt), and assorted unknown species. I prefer a fly rod with red dumbbell eye bonefish flies. Due to the many topless bathers, you have to be very mindful of your back casts.
A spinning rod that you would use for inshore Gulf Coast fishing is ideal. Do not use braided line, because, If you do hook onto a bull shark, or a very large jack, just break off monofilament line and continue down the beach (an extra spool might come in handy). A small pink jig......,with perhaps a piece of land crab on the hook....., is the only spinning lure you will need. Cast only when you see a fish, lt the jig sit on the bottom.......,when the fish gets close, just jiggle the lure a little.

Do you need a fishing license in Mexico? I'll be in Cozumel in a couple of weeks.

I brought my gear down for my wedding. 1.) The kayak rentals are garbage. 2.) The fishing is awesome. 3.) Certain areas are off limits but if you talk with the guides theybcan help you. 4.) If you want to go with a guide, contact them ahead of time and see if they will be willing to trade tackle for part if not all of a trip. The tackle is gouged for 3x as much there as we get it stateside. If you need a guide I have a friend down there who will give you a solid discount if you tell him I sent you. 5.) Tackle is expensive and a hot commodity down there, lock your stuff up and never leave it visable. The guide I spoke of had his GPS stolen while we were down. That being said he knew the spots from landmarks and we still killed it. Pm me for any other info you need.

You need a license for kayaking and fishing but oddly enough not for beach or charters...
Re: Fishing From a all inclusive resort in Mexico?
Thanks for all the advise, I am all in, 3 days of fishing. The Gulp shrimp and strips are a good idea, I also was thinking of using a slab style jig and a deep diving crankbait.
SA Hunter, nice fish, did you catch those off the beach from your resort on a kayak?

1/4 to 3/4 of a mile offshore on the guides panga in 200 to 350ft of water. Very doable out of a kayak if they would have had a decent one available. Off the beach you may pull some grunt and larger jacks. Best bet is to get a guide. They run 250 plus a day but will put you on fish. If you want to go with Salas, tell him Tod sent you his way and he said there would be a friend discounted trip price of ~200. If you contact him ahead of time on facebook offer to trade tackle for trips. Also eat at Gabriels off of Calle 14 next to the Gran Porto. They cook tour catch fresh and it beats the pants off of any food I have experienced at the inclusive resorts.

I have been going to cancun for the 25 years. I always take fishing gear with me. You can fish anywhere off the beach. I always go to the market and buy shrimp and squid. Just keep all your gear simple:fishing pole, weights, small pliers, hooks that's about it. Don't take to much. Remember you are a tourist nobody will be asking you for a fishing license. I have done this for many years.
Since I stay in cancun I also go to the local fisherman and offer them 30 to 50 dollars to take me fishing. You would be surprised at how sharp these local guys are when it comes to fishing. Usually you will catch barracuda while trolling this is such a thrill. If you do go with these local fisherman they have all the equipment you need.

What they said, I took a break down pole with me on my honeymoon and killed it fishing the beaches at night (In Antigua though). All the snook I could handle. During the day I was too busy putting the "all inclusive" drink service to the test.

Seeing that you are going down for a wedding, I'd figure your nighttime activities will be well regulate by that.
Check with the hotel concierge about fishing guides. There are several that will pick you up in the morning, fish you whole or half day and bring you back. The problem with Carmen is that you are about half way between Isla Blanca and Boca Paila so, you may have a longer taxi ride. Might be worth looking in to. Also, most of them will supply tackle, if you need it.
I hope you have a great trip.

Well I will be at a all-inclusive here in May in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
I have a small fishing charter booked as well for one 8 hour day, but in between I will be fishing the beaches when ever possible for roosterfish or/what ever.
I am taking reel/rod and some great artificials. I have bought a fishing license good for 7 days for Mexico.
I will let you know how favor and post up on any further details I can provide you with for your trip.

Re: Fishing From a all inclusive resort in Mexico?
I was in Cabo last month for the first time, cool place.
Really wish I brought a rod with some lures. I was climbing along the cliffs/shore between the sand beach and Pelican Rock (I think that was the name, just before Lover's Beach or the point that separates the Sea of Corez and the Pacific). There were Sierra mackerel jumping out of the water everywhere within casting range. Next time I go I am bringing gear and probably will rent a kayak and fish/dive out of it all day.
Not to mention you can get into mahi or yellowtail close to shore too. Will need some heavier tackle for that though. I think normal trout gear with some wire-rigged spoons or jigs could handle those sierras well. Jigs would probably work well for any snapper too. Speargun would be my first choice and the most fun way to fish it though.
That area has a lot of untapped kayak fishing potential. Funny seeing big 30'+ sportfishers running a mile or so off the beach well within kayak fishing range. I will be going back for a fishing trip (I was there for a wedding) sometime in the future for sure.

Nice thread! All the times I've been to mexico, I never thought about fishing off the beach. I will be in Playa del Carmen on May 25th. Any advice on which travel/breaking down rod to bring? I would prob bring down a 2500 reel paired with the travel reel.

Depends on what your chasing. I am trying the new Andros by Okuma and so far it isnpretty sweet at an affordable price. Also found the reason kayaking is untapped is because that would require a license. Guides have a license which covers the client.
