DIY Outriggers

Post by Boaty »

I have a Perception Pescador 12 and wanted a way to make it more stable. These outriggers will work for any kayak though.

Materials:
2 Boat Fenders
2 Yakattack Mighty mounts
2 Yakattack Screwballs
2 Ram Tube Rod Holders
1 1/4" PVC Sch 40
2 1 1/4" Tees
4 1 1/4" 90' Elbows
4 1 1/4" to 3/4" Reducers
3/4" PVC Sch 40
4 3/4" Caps
2 Stainless snap pins

Install the mighty mounts where you want the outriggers to sit. I put mine right behind the seat. Then drill a hole in Ram Tube and the PVC arm to fit the snap pin through.

Fantastic idea and well made! Gonna need to do this for my Ascend to see if it can make it in heavier waves. Thanks!

Just make sure you have a backing plate under the rod holders
Might put some unnecessary stress

Nice set up

I just bought a Hobie pa14 on Craigslist and it had something like this mounted to a boondocks landing gear. I thought it was homemade like the ones above but after looking it up it was a kit from yak gear. http://www.austinkayak.com/products/865 ... ggers.html He had cut them down a bit and painted them the same color as the Hobie. I thought it was a cool idea though I'm not sure a Pa14 needs more stability. So I'll probably never use them and just use the rod holders for trolling :)

I have two Scotty rod mounts I will use as base for anchoring. 4 screws in each and a backing plate on each. It should hold well. Thanks.

B. I've been thinking of doing this to my kayak. I have a heritage angler pro14. It has a narrow width. How much did this project cost, price wise?

It cost about ~$100. Not only were these cheaper than pre made options, but I like the design better and they remove in seconds.

You could easily shave off $35 by using Scotty rodholders but I wanted to use the Ram rocket launchers because I also use them as rod/net storage behind the seat when not using the outriggers.
