Port Arthur

Post by Ndlacuna »

Howdy y’all,
I’m going to be interning in port Arthur for about a month and I’m pretty much just going to be fishing the bayous and marshes in my yak during my free time in the evenings. If anyone is trying to meet up feel free to pm me as with covid happening I can’t do much else besides get out on the water. Additionally if you have any tips for the area they would be greatly appreciated it. So far my plan is to just fish the cuts and back lakes in the Sabine pass area and possibly try to paddle on to the surf side of the jetty.
Thanks in advance

I haven't fished there in a long time (2007/2008), but we did well in Bessie Heights and the north shoreline fishing toward Louisiana. Keith Lake is another popular spot. Be careful at the jetties or in the surf. Also, watch out for the gators; I lost quite a few topwaters when I fished there.

Here are some older threads from TKF with good info:

I've fished Keith Lake on numbers occasions and always...,well, mostly...,had good red fish luck on top water ( I use nothing but Spook Jr's) when spin fishing, and Redfish Crack when fly fishing.

If, however, you have a fear of alligators, I would stay away from Keith.

I grew up in Port Arthur, but am in the Houston area now. I can confirm Keith Lake’s popularity, although it’s honestly a little too popular now since they built the public boat ramp several years back. I went fishing there with my dad back in June, and it was shoulder to shoulder on the lake.
If you keep driving past Keith lake (closer to Texas Point NWR), there are some little bayous you can dump a kayak into if you wanna fish the marsh. There are also great kayak spots closer to Bridge City (search google maps for Bailey’s fish camp). These will put you into the north end of Sabine lake and the surrounding marshes. All of these areas will be snakey/gator infested, so keep your wits about you and think twice about dragging a stringer :D

I also had good luck from launching into Keith Lake. It has a public ramp and there is a ramp access off the major road between Keith Lake and Sabine Pass. I've even taken my kayak out of Keith Lake and into the pass close to where the flounder could be found. It was fun and very eventful for me! Good luck! I also buy my LA fishing license to help support them as well so think about where you will fish and if in the LA area you have to have a LA license.

Here is the post I made after a few trips...http://www.texaskayakfisherman.com/foru ... p?t=247114

Thanks for the info y’all! So far I’ve hit Texas bayou and Keith lake and caught some reds and drink trout. Went back to Texas bayou yesterday but the real low tide made the fishing pretty bad. I want to try out old river cove and the north levee on the east side and hopefully get into some bigger trout. Any body fish these areas or knows how old river looks on low tide?

I have launched from LA side of bridge and hit the areas I have outlined and noted. Lots of morning action at all the locations on this map for me. Just watch the tide movement to help you get to those areas without fighting current.

Yes. My Hobie PA 14. It was fun the first trip seeing and learning the areas over there. Good luck when you go. Learned alot from the first trip. The marshes to the north of the bridge are great to fish also if you can paddle that far north. Use the currents again to help you since this is basically a "pass" with lots of water flow.Contact me if you have any questions!
Also use Google Earth to see images from the past and present to see boats and kayaks in the areas I circled. It will give you better sense of how they fish there.
Peace and stay safe from the pandemic!

Probably too late, but there is a great sand flat and beach before you get to the jetties in Sabine Pass, close to the old coast guard station, on the channel side...lots of flounders there.
