I'm new to fly fishing for reds, but I'm addicted!!!

Post by TrailChaser »

I've only caught a couple dozen reds on the fly so far, so I'm still a super green newb. I'm amazed at how many times you can pick it up and put it down and they just search for it when they hear it hit the water. I've been using a combo from Kastking for the last couple of months, and just bought a Sage reel and some Scientific Angler redfish line(8wt) the difference in casting is like night and day. I have cut my false cast number in half to get the same distances.

Here's a video I made from the other day with my dog. I didn't want it to run too long so all the reds at the beginning are the ones that didn't make the cut.(caught a bunch of reds on the fly that day)

First redfish to eat one of my tied lures.(the huge crazy fiddler crab fly)

Here's some reds I caught on a fly I made from a green ratchet strap and a orange whistle lanyard with brass eyes and a feather. This was two days after the video.

Caught this girl out of a school of tailing reds under the birds.

My first Topwater red! I was super stoked about that eat.

This was the day my flyfishing addiction really took hold. My first flounder and redfish on the fly in the same day.(about 20mins apart)

Great report and really nice photos.
Don't take this the wrong way, I was there 30 years ago and, while I love it, in the salt I reserve fly rod for the kind of sight-fishing you're doing, but where I really like it is wading the barrier island lakes. Sight-fishing has a buck-fever factor that always brings up your adrenaline.
The levels to add in fly fishing are sinking lines, and reserve those for tide passes, and conditions where you expect to be on fish, but can't necessarily see them. Otherwise, blind fishing a fly rod becomes an obstinate activity.
Have this one blackwater example of a Teeny TS-250 sinking line and a day of smacks bobbing off the SP jetties.
