Mud lake / Clear Lake

Post by Eat Sleep Fish »

Wanted to see if anyone has gone up into mud lake from clear lake and tried trout or red fishing up in there, I found a video on youtube of a guy catching nice reds back up in there just trolling the shore and working the trees and grass but I have a kayak and wanted to know if anyone has ever been back in there and caught fish?

I fished it Mon. and Tues. 2 weeks ago. I put in at 8:30ish since I had to drop daughter at MDO. the bite was right then and quickly slowed down. I worked the left shore line past the condos. lot of bait. mullet and small silver minnows. I did not see any gators, but I know they can be back there. Looks like a great place for a short trip. I picked up a large gaftop, and 6 rat reds 16" to 19". I would like to try that area at sun up. I picked up a few under the bridge which made it nice to get out of the direct sun. gulp on 1/8 oz jig and under popping cork.I never went past the power lines. I have gone back into Horsebend Bayou but from bay area park. (from reds to large mouth bass, but during the winter months). I have picked up some nice trout under the bridge 6 months ago or so.

I mainly fish BTB past the surf zone. I live in Clear Lake and would like to fish Mud lake once in a while as well as Armand bayou for bass. Have to juggle schedule around work and three kids. Post up if you would like a partner sometimes. I plan to fish BTB most of the time in September.

You can catch reds from the Middlebrook Bridge on Horsepen Bayou all the way up to, and including Mud Lake, and Clear Lake. I'm assuming that similar conditions exist for Armand up and around the Slough and in the Slough all the way to Red Bluff. I anchored up one day in September a couple years ago with a light spinning rig (6# test) and commenced to get hook-up after hook-up on large reds. I landed two at 26 and 27 and lost a few more right at the boat when I didn't net them fast enough. They bolted and the 6# test was not up to the run. I have not completely figured out that stretch of water since I've only begun fishing it in the past few years, but I know there's fish there, thick as theives. I also know there's a big gator, about as long as my Perception Bimini, that likes to cruise the spots I like to haunt. He's got lots of little friends in that same area. I call the channel around the half-moon island, "Alligator Alley".

PM me if you want to go. I work at the JSC and might be convince to knock off a little early and get in the water after work.

Haha oh and I know a thing or 2 about gators, I have seen some monsters in there man, 10ft plus. One came running of the bank in bay oaks when my buddy and I were yak fishing and we were in a 14ft kayak and it looked as big as it!

I've had some really good luck in there during the winter months. The mouth of mud lake is really deep...and the back is super shallow. On sunny days, the mud bottom combined with all the trees blocking a north wind allows the water to heat up REALLY fast.

trust me, you can tell a big difference btwn the winter and summer bite there.

Is the mouth right before you hit the clear lake bridge?

I havb done ok out in the flats I haven't been there that many times I have just been wanting to get out into mud lake because I have never tried out there before and I think it would be good for reds, specks and maybe some flounder. Only problem is Fishing Tackle Unlimited doesn't open till 8:30 on Friday so I wouldn't be able to get out until later thats why I was thinking Saturday early morning (6:00-6:30 a.m.) and go up into mud lake and give it a shot.
