Cypress Creek white bass run
Cypress Creek white bass run
A friend steered me to this site and I just registered today so this report is a week late. The white bass run on Cypress Creek doesn't seem to be in full swing yet. Put in at the Cypresswood bridge on Feb 1 and floated to what I call the "gar hole" and caught 6 whites and a crappie. All the whites were large with one close to 3 lbs but never caught more than a single fish out of each of the normal hotspots. A few bank fisherman with 2 or 3 each, not nearly as many as I normally see. Caught the big one on a Blue Fox spinner but the rest on a roadrunner with white curly tail grub.
Re: Cypress Creek white bass run
Where did you park and launch? Is the cypresswood bridge the one near cutten?
Thanks for the report.

Nice catch!
Satellite on Google Maps shows golf layout on the north side of the creek and on both sides of Cypresswood Drive. Seems that the access might be from the south, but east or west side.
Never been, but that location makes for a quick trip. Mind company?

No, the whites don't run that far up into Cypress Creek. There are multiple ways of getting to where I put in, depending on where you are coming from, but here is the simplest description: The bridge is located on the east side of I45. Take FM1960 east to Cypresswood and turn left. As you approach the bridge you will see a narrow, paved side road veer off under the bridge - take this road (it's basically a U turn road). Park under the bridge (across from the horse farm) and put in down the hill. There are other access points off FM1960 to different spots along the creek but I don't know how to get to them.

Google maps has it right, there is a golf course along the creek and you'll hear the smack of golf balls as you are fishing. The access point I use is on the south side of the creek. The U turn road that goes under the bridge is accessible from both the east and west sides.
Never been, but that location makes for a quick trip. Mind company? Come out any time Swiftie. There are usually bunches of bank fisherman to navigate around but few kayakers. The creek is pretty narrow this far up so it could easily get crowded with kayaks if too many were there at one time but I've never had this problem.
Downstream of where Spring Creek and Cypress Creek connect at Jesse Jones Park is also a good spot, the creek is much wider down this way. Access is easy through the park with a new canoe launch area.

Re: Cypress Creek white bass run
Last week I was out on the 8th and 9th. instead of the kayak, I put in my PB at the hwy 59 launch. I dont thek the white bass run has really started, but it's sure close. Friday, I fished up the san jac river west of 59, and did ok early, the the bite completely stopped. I trolled back down the san jac catching only small black bass (though a number of them) and finally motored up cypress creek. I did'nt do any good at the spring/cypress crks junction. Spring crk was flowing hard, but very muddy, and I left there after 10 minutes or so. The deep 'gar hole' up past the bicycle bridge gave me two more whites, and that was it for friday.
Saturday, my lovely bride wanted to go, and she mostly skunked me catching three whites, and three black bass. I do feel I did well thought, catching a flathead on a yellow roadrunner. If things pick up for me, I'll check back in...Matt
PS: If I can figure out how to get photos off of my phone and post them, I will

Re: Cypress Creek white bass run
Had a feeling the rain forecasted for the week of the 4th would muddy things up a bit so I'm happy about my choice to go on the 1st. Sounds like the run still hasn't started in full swing so thanks for confirming that Matt. The Spring/Cypress creek confluence is usually very productive so if you aren't catching them there then probably aren't alot upstream in either creek. There's always a few no matter what and fishing is fishing so that shouldn't stop anyone wanting to get out on the water. Keep us posted if you make another trip.

Here is a map of what I believe is your put-in point at Cypress Creek. Please let me know if this is correct.

Re: Cypress Creek white bass run
I live near the Creek just west of Kuykendahl, and most years, the whites will go up at least as far as Kuykendahl. They'll go as far as they need to find the right conditions for spawning, namely water that has a slow steady flow over sand or gravel. I've had years where I could walk down to the creek and catch a couple dozen in a couple hours.

Re: Cypress Creek white bass run
Absolutely the correct place Swiftie. There must have been 8 to 10 kayakers launching from there Saturday. I'm looking at Thursday of this week as a good lookin day to try again. One of these little fronts has to turn on the whites and crappie, but only time will tell which one. Though I've not had much rain so far (I10 @ the westbelt) there should still be plenty of drainage along cypress creek watershed. I'll check in later this week.
I really wish i knew where to find minnows close to cypress creek/San Jac river @ HWY59. I've seen what i think are crappie on my depth finder, but cant get them to hit jiggin. It's very frustrating.
I'll be in the PB thursday I think: an old guy like me is still suffering with winter sloth in my paddling muscles.

The upper crossing, a mile and a quarter east of 249, is not the one they are referring to. The crossing they are referring to is about eight miles east of IH-45 on Cypresswood.fishfever2 wrote:cypress wood dr crosses cypress creek twice and both spots are next to golf courses

Re: Cypress Creek white bass run
Okay, so for some pre-visit geography, here's a few questions for the experienced Cypress Creek Yak Club
Creek distance (east from put-in spot) to first creek coming in from the north and name? Accumulatvive distance to the next downstream creek coming in from the north and name? Accumulative or distance from second creek to U.S. 59 bridge (appears to be a very short distance)? The first creek appears to be the county line, according to Google Maps, then it follows Cypress Creek to where the second creek feeds in, then the county line shoots to the northeast across land.
Are there any low areas where you need to drag your yak accross shallow water? Any pirates along the way?

Re: Cypress Creek white bass run
Ok, let's see if I can remember some of your questions.
1. Distance to Spring Crk, from the north, is a long paddle. I wouldn't do it, and I'm a spring chicken, one year younger than you...
2. Distance to hwy 59 bridge, is a very very long paddle. We ( you and I) shouldn't attempt it. Heck, I get tired during the trip in my powered boat.
3. You should never have to drag your ride at any time. ( unless of course you don't pay attention, and paddle on to a sand bank.
I think there's fine fishing between cypresswood, and a bicycle/hiking bridge over the Crk, a half mile or so down stream. The merg with spring creek is another mile or so i would guess. Heck, I'll drive a boat all the way from the 59 bridge to fish that stretch of water. (though I can't get all the way to cypresswood in my boat). Matt

Copy, Matt, thanks.
If I'm not mistaken, from Google Maps, it appears that the bicycle bridge that you make reference to may be a golf cart bridge for the golfers. Maybe I'm wrong.
When I am able to plan a trip, I'll let you know and maybe you can call in "not interested" that day and join me on a venture down Cypress Creek. I'll take my Lowrance Endura Safari with me and take coordinate readings along the way.
Look forward to the opportunity.

Re: Cypress Creek white bass run
Say mates, since my bride doesn't kayak, but likes to fish, can you guys help me by providing me land access routes to bank locations along that section of Cypress Creek....say from Cypresswood Dr down towards U.S. 59. Need to know where to park (legally) and direction to somewhat shallow bank fishing...or any other location y'all recommend. Thanks!

Re: Cypress Creek white bass run
Swiftie, three or four places come to mind to fish from the river bank.
1. the south side of the river at hwy59. there is a U turn-a-round off the feeder. I've seen folks unload gear near where they plan to fish, and then go park in the lot.
2. Priviate park/boat launch on the north side of the river, near the RR Bridge. Before the bridge, take the Loop 'something of other" exit. Stay on the feeder over the bridge, and turn right at the stop sign. A short way down, and just before the RR tracks, there's a dirt road off to the right, turn in there. It's a bumpy path, and muddy after a rain, so caution. There's a guy lives there who charges $5 to launch fish or just hang out. Many do just that. I've seen nice stringers of cats and whites while loading my jon boat.
3. Jessie Jones park. I've never fished there, but always talk to the folks fishing there as I pass. From the number of folks fishing the creek there, I bet there are some well worn paths. Maybe google earth it.
4. last would be the Cypresswood bridge site. Returning in my kayak, I've seen some mighty fine stringers there too. Seems to me that when the whites are 'on', they're all up and down the creek, and hungry.
So good luck, and get your bride outdoors...Matt
PS: we'll have to hook-up soon, and I'll give ya a boat tour/fish-a-long, of the river and creek. I cannot however, get all the way to Cypresswood in my boat. The creek has become far to clogged to get through...

Copy, Matt....thanks!
Nothing beats some OJT. Believe I'd be dead from exhaustion already if I still had an 8 to 5. I'm thinking the weekend holds lots of creek traffic. Unfortunately, next week I only have Wednesday as a window of opportunity. Last week in February I've got a VA appt. on Wed. and Thurs is also booked. Thus, Mon, Tues, and Fri. are open....should the whites start their run and the weather is favorable.
Determined to hook up with you during this season's white run for sure.

Re: Cypress Creek white bass run
Raul, if you bank fish from the north bank under the east edge of the 59 bridge you can cast into some 25' water. There are some big cats in there, and often whites and crappies. If you hit the south side of the river just west of the 59 bridge the channel runs up against the bank there. Also, if you go to Edgewater Park and wade or paddle out to the island in front of the ramp, cast east toward the railroad trestle. You just might hook a big old grumpy fish that needs a shave...........
Re: Cypress Creek white bass run
Not to get off topic, but has anyone else noticed that in Texas there are more than 1 place with same name? & sometimes I'm not sure where a person is talking about because of it.
I live 1.5 miles from Lake Travis & Cypress Creek Park run by Travis County Parks, the Cypress Creek being discussed here is in Houston & I believe there are other Cypress Creeks in Texas.
& this happens with other places as well, making things confusing when being discussed on forums like these.

Sure. Seems like every major lake in Texas has a Caney Creek.
