Crate Idea for Your Consideration

Post by TimmyT140 »

Thinking up ways to get my crate off the floor of the tankwell, and also get it firmly attached in case of turtles.

I thought I would just get another crate and cut and fit to raise up off the floor, but I have a one off crate and don't know where to get another one the same size. I guess I could find two more to hack up somewhere...

Then I thought, maybe rig a couple 2 or 3 inch PVC pipes underneath the crate for it to lay on. Not bad...

Or, maybe make up some PVC pipe feet and attach them to the bottom somehow... hmmm IDK

Then, I had the brilliant idea to run a couple flat bars all the way across the top of the tankwell for it to sit on. I can attach them to the slide trax that run along the top of the tankwell on the Tarpon 14 and just bungie the crate to the flat bars!

What do you fellers think? Too high in the wind?

Well, DANG! That sure would simplify the whole deal.

Do you have it strapped down any kind of way?

Most stable would be to make a PVC base with the desired height and tie it with zip ties. To attach it to the kayak tankwell you can use the bungee cords or put pad eyes where you can secure it even more solid.

This is my milk crate with PVC painted black

Another view on my PA14. I just need another milk crate to cut the bottom an use as a lid, but that will b a project when I go BTB when it gets hotter.

That looks real nice, mpg2.
I just got back from Lowe's, found a nice piece of aluminum angle to go across the top. Wait for some better weather to get out and put it on, though.

I bungee it down to the existing pad eyes. No drilling needed to get your crate off the floor.

Here's mine.

Made it to fit snug on the sides of my tankwell so it won't move side to side... Bungee cord is all I need to secure so it won't move backwards or forwards.

OK, I won't tell you what I use it for, it's kinda personal.
That's one aspect of the whole kayaking experience that I need to find a better way of accomplishing.

RE: "Personal Use" item: that's one of the great undocumented features of the Hobie Mirage. It has a built in hole for that very use :). I think Hobie should add that as a feature.

well, this setup is pretty nice and sturdy, but it's almost impossible to get to the cooler now. :? Gotta turn all the way around and kneel on the seat to reach it.

Just go with a soft sided cooler (Polar Bear) and store it between the crate and seat, between the flushmounts.

I zip tied two 1" PVC pipes to the bottom of the crate. Easy and works great.
