Fly Fishing Cayman Brac
Fly Fishing Cayman Brac
Has anyone on here been fly fishing in the Cayman Islands? I'll be in Cayman Brac in May, wondering if I should bring any gear to fish on my own. There is not a guide service on that island. I have an 8 weight G loomis Crosscurrent with Rio redfish line. Would this work ok? I've never been bonefishing, so I'm not sure if I am equipped. I will do some research on Google Earth and see if I can spot some flats that look wade-able.

I have zero experience bone fishing anywhere, I did find this link to dIY bone fishing in the Cayman Islands

I would consider picking up a bonefish taper line if you are serious about fishing while down there. The bonefish lines have a much longer taper and will land much softer, it will also allow you to pick up more line off the water without having to strip in a lot of running line to recasts, when a group of bonefish change direction all of a sudden like they like to do, abd you need to make a quick cast to correct.
I took a redfish taper line the first time I went bonefishing. I spooked quite a few right off the bat partially due to the extreme heavy short redfish head that lands pretty hard. I then had to modify my casting to get the more delicate presentation that was required.
Good luck

I have fished for bonefish in several different location using my Redfish lines and, short of landing across their back, haven't had any issues with it scaring the fish off. The key is distance and accuracy and, practice with a long leader, 12 ft.
I would say that any patterns used on Grand Cayman will work on Brac. If you can find a copy of Dick Brown's book, "Bonefish Fly Patterns", you should get a pretty good idea of the patterns to take with you. He breaks them down by region in the back of the book. Or, pack up a box with size 6 to 2 of Clouser Minnows, Crazy Charlies, Kwans, Got Cha's, Blonde's, small crab patterns and Gummy Minnows and you should be good to go.

I was on Grand Cayman last summer and it was very windy on the east side. I fished down from our hotel. Fly fished one morning as my son was using the spinning rod. We caught bonefish on a 1/8 oz gold weedless spoon just blind casting. Family vacation so not concentrating on fishing.

I figured I'd update this in case anyone is researching for a future trip.
I didn't fish in Brac, too busy diving and exploring. There are fishable flats in front of Brac Reef Beach Resort though. I went to Grand Cayman a couple days also. I booked one day with Davin. http://flatswalker.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Can't say enough about him as a guide. Very patient, fun to be around, good teacher, all around great guy to spend a day with.
Had multiple shots at schoolies and even double digit bones. Saw several laid up snook that refused by fly and almost caught some large box fish. I had a couple hook ups that came off because I trout set. I ended up landing one schoolie bone ~2.5lb. It was awesome. I took a cab back to the national park a day later and waded part of it by myself for about 2 hours. Saw lots of tailing fish and trout set another schoolie, lost him on his first turn.
