Marsh madness 9-9 (and my new cooler)
My work-mandated travels are done, so I finally had the opportunity to return to a marsh I haven't fished in many a moon. Up at 3:30, at the marsh by 6:00. Cripes! Why do I put myself though this? The mosquitoes were dive bombing me like Hirohito's boys in '45 as I launched and began paddling to my first spot. Yay. Fun. No nighthawks called. No owls hooted. No squadrons of gulls flying in the pale glow of predawn. Hmmmmmmm...spookiness was afoot. The tide was super high and I knew the redfish would be scattered to the far corners of the most impenetrable Salicornia and Spartina patches. Look out little shrimps and fiddiddler crabs! Tail-spotted death is coming for you on waves of salty doom. Still, I paddled on, hoping my copper-colored friends would be home and looking for breakfast. I cast my top water and walked it back like a pro, ready for the impending toilet bowl flush and chomp and action-packed battle...hmmmmmm...strange. Nobody chomped it. Again and again I heroically did my best to make fish appear on my hook. Denied! I was wearing a new hat, instead of my traditional, marsh-stalking chapeau. Did I offend the marsh witches? No sooner had that thought entered my grey matter, than I sat down after standing up to get my bearings, and heard the instantly hilarious, yet still frustrating sound of my pants ripping. Yep. Gonna be one of THOSE days.
Definitely marsh witches casting their spells. One spot, two spots, three spots, by the time I was on my fourth spot, I made the command decision to switch to my always-reliable, fun to fish spinnerbait. I cast to drains. I cast against flooded grass. I cast overhand and underhand and side-armed. My mind began to drift. Will Rick perry run for president again in 2020? Will his daughter, Katy perry ever respond to my invitations to take her fishing? What would she wear? What would I wear? Does she eat mosquitoes?
*WHAM*
This ridiculously over-zealous trout attacked right at the shoreline.
Seriously?
At least it was a fish. I kept with the spinnerbait, chucking and reeling and thinking more profound thoughts. Thoughts so deep and important and astonishing, that I don't dare share them with you, TKF, lest you go mad! Where was I? Katy perry...no...spinnerbait! Yes. Ok. I went back to spot 2 and lo and behold! A good sized redfish inhaled it as soon as it hit the water. Caught off guard, I didn't set the hook well enough and when I finally got him yak-side, he simply opened his mouth and swam away. Curses!!! Again and again I cast the spinnerbait, switching to a plastic on jghead and even...yes...a popping cork and synthetic shrimp. But no more fish came to visit. I decided to head home and do some cleaning of my garage, which presently looks like the warehouse at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark. If I dig enough, I'll probably find the damned ark and it won't be lost anymore. But my face will probably melt. So that's my less than spectacular report. Already, my fevered brain is making plans for the next trip. I'll find my redfish friends and try to get some better photos for you TKF.
NOW, onto my new cooler review.
Price: $0.00...it was a freebee at a liquor store in Calgary
Capacity: 24 cans...or enough water to keep my from dying in a day
Verdict: worked fine
Peace be wichew.

Welcome back. Congrats on being able to make a trip like that. Probably a good time to leave since it will be getting cold there soon.
Perhaps these fish got wind of your affairs with those Canadians and are upset with that? I bet they have short memories and all will be forgiven by your next outing.

It's true. My dalliances with the colorful and vivacious Canadian beauties were unfair to the lovely marsh ladies of the Tejas coast. I hang my head in humble supplication and hope they forgive me by next weekend. I'm going to buy a new spinning real (brand unnamed since I am neither sponsored nor endorse any product, being a free and independent agent of fishing Liberty) to show the marsh babes that I still love them.

Cuervo
You may have to throw your new spinning reel in the marsh as a sacrificial offering to fish gods for forgiveness..

Well, I'm sure there's gonna be a lot of happy people to see that you and your reports are back. They just haven't posted yet because they are fishing. Not me, I get to work today, hooray....
Btw, marsh witches hate two-tone underwear. Go with solid colors. You're welcome.

Excellent. Alberta's loss is Texas' gain.

Topwater wordsmithing fails to leave a bewitched scent of skunk upon you. Unlike the hard bait.
Great report.

I'm going to offer "English as a Second Language" classes to the redfish community to help tempt them to my hook. Trout and flounders are also welcome. I don't discriminate or incriminate.
