...this is awesome. Our local fishing will never will get to this level because marlin don't venture within kayak distance here. If they did, I'd be looking for them.

I caught a 600 lb blue from a big boat once, but we didn't have a belt or harness. Just me and an 80w tied to the fish. It was brutal and painful and I really didn't think it was possible to take a fish like that from a kayak. I was wrong, and Adam does it without looking like he cheated death or even got worn out. My hat's off to him!

The fish isn't the controlling factor in a kayak. The kayak is.
You're only having to resist the weight of you, your rig, drag thru the water, and buoyancy if the fish is under you. You just have to do it for a hell of a lot longer, lol.
Truth be told, it don't sound like fun to me.

heck of a ride - the time factor is related to how much continual abuse you and your tackle can take.
Kirk - great answer.

Damn. Nothing but respect for that. My only marlin was 180 lbs from a 31' Cabo Yacht and it took me 45 minutes and a fighting chair. I remember asking the captain about 30 minutes in "How much longer?" "Ten more minutes," he said. Then the line started screaming and he looked at me and laughed, "Maybe twenty."
One of the happiest days of my life. I can't imagine how happy (and exhausted) those guys were.

Yeah broke his own record too. He handled those swells impressively. You can tell he has logged some hours fighting big fish in a yak. Very impressive.

Can a drift anchor add weight to the drag for the fish or will it cause damage to the yak? Not using scupper holes to mount the drift anchor.

It would, but keep in mind, whatever you add to the fish, you add to the fisherman.

What I have done to add drag is put my feet into the water. It won't resist like a drift anchor, but feet come right back into the kayak when needed. Just watch for sharks...

Problem with a drift anchor is getting the line tangled up in the rope. I've never used a drift anchor offshore but have inshore and fish will find a way to get tangled in it. May be more problem than it's worth.

it could work if you have your trolley rigged to get the drift sock deployed quickly and, especially, back in quickly before you get the fish close - haven't tried it offshore, but slot reds will take two trips around your boat on the flats.
