Texas City Dike

Post by kingfish »

Does anyone fish the Texas City Dike regularly? I would like to know some good areas to yakfish from the Dike area. Any suggestions or information would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Charles

I don't yak fish yet but I'd say to go to the floodgate and go into mosses lake, you should be somewhat protected in there. There are reefs that are on most maps, along with marsh and deep holes. also around the misquito island area or the dollar flats themselves. I hear of a lot of people getting ripped off out there lately so lock up your stuff. I would think you'd have less theives at the floodgate since it's so far to exit and only one escape route. 8)

I haven't yakfished there yet, been too busy running everywhere else. I have waded there before I got my yak. I will state the obvious. Mosquito Island, the deep hole on the side of it. Moses lake, hear about cars getting broken into at the gate. Don't know if the stories are true.

On the dike as you are heading out. The right side, I believe that is an ICW, watch the ship traffic, I have seen ship's wakes that roll clear up onto the road on the dike. It was a 4 to 5 foot wall of water, that sent all of the bank fishermen running, some out into the traffic.

Be careful out there.

Oh yeah, go buy Ray's book. It will tell you where to go. He's like Yoda in a kayak, except he's not green, his ears aren't that big, and he's taller. (I met Ray at the fishing show, and he was sitting down, so I really don't know how tall he is, but he has guided damn near evryone of my fishing trips, except when I forget the book at the house and try to wing it, and get lost. )

Yeah, they have some 'bad guys' around there, like anywhere else these days, but just use some common sense. Lock your vehicle and don't leave anything 'attractive' in view. In fact, if I know I'm going there, I take anything of value out of my truck before I go and I park and leave the windows down. I think that tells the bad guys there is nothing there they want and I've never had a problem. Don't go there alone at night. Other than that, the deep hole on the north side close to the shore is a pretty regular spot for any of the 'big three' using shrimp under a cork or free lined or plastics on the right day will do well. Fish when the water is moving. Like the other guys said, that whole shore line north up to the Dollar Point Marina is good fishing, either for a wade fisherman or a guy in a yak. The Moses Lake flood gate can get pretty crowded and you need a boat there for sure.
If you have some surf casting gear, I have seen some really BIG ones
caught off of the south side rocks, out towards the end by people casting live and dead bait out in to the channel.

Texas City Dike

I fish there a lot. Several places are my favorites, I guess everyone has their favorite spot. A couple of my favorites: 1. Go one mile from the gate on Skyline drive, there are some oyster reefs there. Wade or put in your yak at the base of the dike. (you may have to drive skyline and count telephone poles to mark location) 2. Fish in front of the Gazebo. Another easy wade or yak area. 3. Moskito island. This is the area just past the baitcamps. Wade alongside the exposed shell, when you get to the end, you can see the A frame of a sunken shrimp boat. Fish towards the boat. (this area will get real crowded on weekends). 4. Fish the area near the gates of Moses Lake. This is at the end of skyline dr. I like the area from the gates back out about 400 yds. Scattered shell in this area. Except for Moskito island and the area around the Gazebo, it is difficult to put your yak in the water. I have asked the owner of Dollar Bay bait camp if I could launch from there, he declined, saying he was afraid I would get run over by powerboats. I have not asked in a year or so, I may ask again. Straight out from the Bend (Dollar Point) in skyline is Dollar reef. It is a deep water reef (6-8') that holds a lot of trout during the summer.
I have an artificial only tournement Saturday, I will probably be there (depending on the wind) fishing. I have a green drifter, and a white F150 with a TKF sticker on it. Come by and say hi!
Good luck.

texas city dike

Post by Nomad »

When fishing in Texas City, I always hear amazing Texas City dike fish stories from everyone around me. However, the people telling the stories have never caught a fish the day they are telling the stories. For me, mosquito island has never produced more than 1-2 good fish during a trip. I'm sure some people do well there; but I never have. I would love some suggestions on the spot.

I have better luck fishing the deep hole on the north side of moses. I have not found a good place to put the yak in. I always feel like I have a target on my head when I return to the floodgate bank at dark. Then I have to see if the truck has been broken into. Other places to put in are a pretty good paddle to the north hole and still put you at risk for a break in. I tried the 146 bridge at moses bayou one time. I got the truck stuck in the mud and almost stepped on some junkies heroin syringe that was on the ground under the bridge. If anyone puts in there the needles are everywhere under the bridge so watch out. I have had good luck at the north moses hole; but I haven't found a good spot to put in. Does anyone have a good launch site for the moses hole?

We need to get with the local cops and set up a couple of stings down there. We've done it several times here in Houston.

You would think the TX City government would have already realized
what their 'rep' is costing them in dollars. I guess their mentality is that they get all the money they need from the port and that is all they really need. I've been hearing about the 'activities' that go on around the dike for years, yet the city doesn't seem to care much. The area could sure use a few extra tourist dollars from the looks of things most of the time I've been down there. I would think a few extra patrols each shift or a sting that works out and gets in the news, and a 'cop blitz' every now
and again would go a long way towards making the dike a nicer place
for everybody. My $.02.

I have a friend that fishes the area near the gazebo and has caught several trout in the 8lbs range there in previous years in the month of May. This year he didnt do so well there. Foulhooked and I tried it a few times this year with not much luck.

I know we've all read the tales about break-ins and crime on the TC Dyke and it's certainly perpetuated here and other boards but does anybody have any first (or close first hand) experience on this? I've always wondered how bad it really is. I've never launched at the dyke or the flood gates because of this but I will eventually and take my chances.

Nomad, there are two marinas inside Moses Lake that you could launch at, do a search on this site and you should be able to locate them. As it's been much discussed here.

Anybody have any current information on the new development they're going to do inside Moses lake?

That's a good point Ronbo. I have never met anyone who was been broken into at either place. I have parked on a mound of broken side window glass at the flood gate. I can't imagine how there could have been a car wreck up there; but I guess it's possible. With everything that has been said, I guess I still assume the broken glass was from a break-in.

Ya know, if the truth were told........................................
I don't want to name names, but my wife and I visited a very popular sporting goods store recently, in the middle of the day. When we parked, there was all this glass on the asphalt...... We got to the door, and some folks were waiting on the police. Their truck had been broken into, in broad daylight...... At one of our favorite fishing tackle outlets..............Won't mention the name!
We shopped for a while, and when checking out, I mentioned the folks who had been outside to the checker. She said that this happened probably once a month. Someones car/truck gets broke into, during daylight hours, in a MAJOR sporting goods outlet, and no security cameras, at her admittance,,,,,,, at least once a month!!!
Now,..........I don't know about you, but I find this nuts. If I'm going to spend my bucks in a place, and this is a sponsor of this site, I think they could at least try to provide some semblence of security................Parking lot camers, etc.........
And this is at their store,, not on the dike, or lake or seashore........
No place is absolutely protected..........
