Fly recipe--The Voodoo Child
Here is the recipe:
Hook Mustad 4307; size 4, 6, 8
Thread Danville Prewaxed Nylon; size 6/0 White
Tail Glow in the Dark Flashabou; Orange (Dan Bailey’s is the only source I know of)
Hackle Premium Hackle; Barred Olive or Grizzly
The fly was the brainchild of a friend, Will Myers, who is perhaps the best saltwater flyfisherman going. He showed it to me about four years ago and I use it about 90% of the time in water less than 18 inches deep. It is a killer......

Angler's Workshop has glow-in-the-dark Flashabou in several colours. The SKU for the orange is GDFLBU54. The number is for the colour. Do a search of GDFLBU to find all colours. You may reach them on the web athttp://www.anglersworkshop.com Their web site isn't anywhere near as complete as is their catalogue. Call them at (360) 225-6359 to request one. I've done business with them for years. They go the extra mile to ensure your service.

The voodoo child
I think the fly has several things going for it.
First, there is something to that glow in the dark flashabou that seems to provide a very strong visual signature for reds. They just seem to see it really well. It works for trout as well, by the way.
The hackle color seems to be important on providing some level of contrast to the tail. Olive and brown seem to be good colors, but cream does not seem to work well. Barry has some light colored hackled flies for this pattern, might ask how they work for him.
I add some krystal flash for low light situations, as well, and forgot that in the recipe.
Fly does not sink very quickly and is very easy to cast.
If there are reds feeding, they can not seem to resist this pattern.

I think the VC is a great fly in the shallow water. The Reds can't seem to resist it. The light colored ones (silver badger) seems to catch as well for me as the darker shades. I really think that adding a weed guard to the Child improves its performance in the real shallow grassy areas. At least it did for me.
I've not had a lot of luck with the VC in deeper water for Trout, although I haven't fished it on a sinktip line yet.

Hackle
There's more types of hackle than you can shake a rod at. Could you recommend a particular type/brand.
And, what flavor of krystal flash.
Oh, and Cabela's carries the glow flashabou. It's listed within the regular falshabou.

Bill will it guarantee Mercy to catch a fish??
Lets see just how good the bait is.
Will it let Mercy Catch catch that big Red for her avatar?
BE sure to vote for your favorite avatar for her.
How big was the attendance for the May kayak meeting at PA?
Any chance to get one set for the Houston area? Thougth about trying you, TKF, TPWL, and possibly cutrate to get a big one here. Say a meet, eat and possibly a little fishing??
Be nice to get a poll up if there is some interest.

I may be wrong, but I don't think that the Glow Flashabou is the same material as the Glow in the Dark Flashabou.

glow in the dark flashabou
Dan Bailey may call the material Glow In The Dark Flashabou but the company that makes the product (Cascade Fly Tying Material) calls it Everglow Flash. I stock the product in four colors - Luminescent Orange, Luminescent White, Luminescent Green, and Luminescent Red (pinkish red). Price - $3.75. It comes on a plastic stick like Krystal Flash.

Barry- you may be right. Glow Flashabou may not be the same as Glow in the Dark Flashabou. And then they may be the same as Everglow Flash. I said Cascade makes the material and this may be incorrect. They wholesale the material to dealers. Last year I took a fly to the retailers show in Denver and Cascade matched it. I did not stop by Dan B. booth. This material is thinner than flashabou and has a plastic like texture. E-mail me your address and I will send you a sample.

LTF,
The Voodoo Childs that Bill taught us to tie in his class were tied with grizzly hackle. By the way(BTW), what does it take for an item to get listed by search engines? The Voodoo Child fly should be famous enough to score hundreds of Google hits. Among the several searches that I did which included the words voodoo, child, redfish, and fly; only Lycos returned a site that referred to the famous fly, and that was Larry McKinney's article about fresh water inflows in Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine. Disturbingly, there was one other reference to an obscure steelhead spade fly called the voodoo child.

Here's a photo of a Voodoo that's tied with Silver Badger hackle. This color combination has worked well for me in the past.

I use METZ #1 & #2 saddles for most of my tying. You can pick them up off e-Bay in the $6.00- $18.00 range. The price floats due to demand and to the color of the saddle.
