6/15/08 Buffalo Bayou

Post by Ol English »

Forever Fishing's report inspired us to take a trip downtown to see what myself and Joe could catch at Buffalo Bayou in Houston.

Joe starts catching Cats on worm.

I get a decent one on shrimp.

We caught lots of these.

I got this one on tortilla.

We started catching nice size Sunfish.

I finished up with this one on shrimp.

We launched around 7a at Sabine St and made it down to I59 before heading back. We got out around 3.30p. This was a unique experience and was a lot of fun. Plenty of fish in the bayou, especially Cats. Saw Longose Gars, lots of Mullet and a Placo. We finished up with 25 Cats to 23" and 7 nice Sunfish. We were using light spinning rods so the bigger Cats really pulled hard. All fish were released.

Nice size eating catfish you caught. Just where did you launch your yaks from?

Alex and Joe - great catch, photos and trip report! I wonder how long it will be before the game wardens have to start hiring new recruits to cover the waters of downtown Houston! I am really impressed with these reports of great urban trips. You guys make me feel like a (native Houstonian bayou fishing) kid again :D

Now that's true urban fishing, not suburban. Few would expect catfish that size withing sight of downtown on dirty old Buffalo Bayou. The bayou is alive. Good going Ol English and Joe. The bayou looks as though it would be a good place to hit with a fly rod.

Just curious...being in such an urban area..would those fish be unsafe to eat?

Buff Bayou has high coliform bacteria concentrations, lots of run-off from the streets, and overall poor water quality. Its an eat at your own risk kind of thing. What the catch shows, however, it the stream is getting better.

Read my answer to Beve above. Eat them if you want, but I would not.

It was just off I45 on Sabine St. between Allen Parkway and Memorial Drive.
