Re: Prickly Pear Syrup

Problem I've always had with prickly pear fruit is how slimy (snot-like) the juice is. Maybe I can't get the right level of ripeness, not sure. It seems to be common issue though. I've tried freezing and re-freezing method a couple times, to break down the cell walls. Tried to make some mead with th...

Re: Pre-trip Advice?

Yeah, bad timing. Sustained 20mph and gusting up to 30 is not something I'd fish. I assume you're talking about bay fishing, not offshore which will definitely not be doable with surf up to 5 ft. The forecast from now through end of week is enough sustained high winds, it's probably not going to sig...

Re: Exotic fish spotted in Galveston Surf

My google fu says that crocs are not native to texas and not found here. Seems like there is an american croc that lives is south florida though.

But agree, it was likely a spade fish that was seen.

Re: Matagorda Rig Question

I don't fish that area, but what I will call out is that a lot of rigs noted on nav charts, NOAA sites, etc... are no longer there. A lot have been removed, so that may be what is going on.

PINS trip report last weekend

Headed down PINS Friday and woke up to great conditions on Sat. Plan was to go mostly bottom fish over structure, as I wanted some fish for the freezer. Surface temp was 81 degrees, water seemingly clear, but actually seemed pretty pea-green and dingy down below (I sent a gopro down to see). Not muc...

Re: Jet ski trailer modification

Just go buy some treated wood and use that instead. It will be less effort and cost less, certainly over time. Painting/varnishing wood won't last. Treated wood will last +10 years or more on a trailer even if kept outside in the elements all the time. Also, if I could make a suggestion, having two ...

Re: Braided line color

My dirty little secret that I'll confess shamelessly..... I've been using the same braid on a few of my main bay/freshwater reels for 20 years. I think I've reversed the line one time (so basically swapped the line laying on the inside, to the outside. I use 20lb powerpro green line. I've never ever...

Please Please Please hold weather and surf....

Only downside it is predicting showers and storms, but its still way too early to count that with any accuracy.

Re: Mustang Island-775 Reef

For a strong paddler it’s not the distance that is the issue. When you’re that far from shore and a thunderstorm pops up, life can get more interesting than you want and those storms can move a lot faster than any of us. Been there... Yup, me too. I've had some pretty terrifying mistakes getting ca...

Re: Lures for Sightcasting to Redfish

We're talking sight casting specific here but I use two set-ups. The normal go-to is the standard 4" shad type soft plastic rigged with a 1/32 slip wt with a rubber stopper to prevent sliding (as pictured). Always rigged weedless. Usually the color here is pretty much my go-to..i think it's &qu...

Re: New pedal kayak maker

I looked into these kayaks a couple weeks ago when i heard about the promo..$1,100 for a Houston pick-up. Its a pretty good deal. I figured if I didn't like it, I could re-sell it for at least that and get my $$ back. I decided not to get one because (detail pictures are few, but from what I could t...

I don't see an issue with that photo. It's clear to me he's a guide and is holding up a stringer of his 3 clients' limits (all legal) that they caught. It does not say he released them, and I took it to mean by "prepared" it meant he cleaned and filleted them for his clients afterward. I t...

Re: Fish storage while offshore

What do you put inside the front hatch? The only thing I've ever had in mine is my battery. I connect it before heading out and never touch it until I hit land at the end of the day. I've yet to launch through the surf since I bought this kill bag earlier this year, but can see your point. Dave In ...

Re: PINS August 1st-6th driving condition question

Re coyotes down PINS.... I woke up in my tent one night, felt something was wrong. Got out of tent take a leak and was looking around for whatever that felt off. Something, somewhere... I went over to my kayak sitting in the sand to check if some of my gear got stolen... sure enough, my two drybags ...

Re: PINS August 1st-6th driving condition question

How far down are you planning on driving? That matters, as conditions usually get worse around the 20s. If you're only going 15 miles in, i wouldn't worry about driving conditions. That said, driving gets worse the dryer the sand is and the longer it goes without rain. So given the drought we've bee...

Re: Fish storage while offshore

What you picture would be my current setup if I moved my bag to the bow.

What I don't like about your set up there is 1) I lose east access to the front hatch and 2) that bag catches a lot of water in the surf on your way out.

Re: Fish storage while offshore

I'm skeptical. lol. Good to know that a bleach rinse works for you. It just seems like the slime and blood would get problematic over time without being scrubbed out. Part of my problem though, is I usually go down PINS for 2-3 days at a time and don't have a way for a good rinse on the same-day. Mo...

Fish storage while offshore

I've seen some of you guys just stuff your fish down the hatch in your kayaks, no cooler. How do you deal with the mess and the smell. I cannot see how you'd clean all the fish slime and stink from inside of your kayak hull. I've always used the normal kayak fish bag type of cooler strapped to the b...

Re: Ready for the next one?

I keep and use both a bat and a spear gaff when offshore.

Bat is a sawed off shovel handle.

Spear gaff made of a big thick dowel (could be another shovel handle, i cant remember) with a piece of threaded stainless steel rod inserted in it with a copper end cap over the whole fitting.

Also, it appears that this rule is only applicable to the Gulf of Mexico Exclusive Economic Zone, which if you look it up, the inner boundary of this (nearest the shore) is bound by the state waters. Which in Texas is 9 miles. So the way I read it is that this Descend Act does not apply if you are f...
