Re: Fly line recommendations

Try cleaning the part that doesn't float unless you're just looking for something new.

Re: Doing something wrong fly line is getting twists

If you're on moving water, strip out the line until your backing is beyond the guides and just let it flow for a bit down stream with no fly tied on. Real it back in and you're good to go. I try to do this as soon as I get on the river.

Most of those irrigation ditches are dry in the off season but you were spitting distance from the Henry's Fork.

Re: The River Why

If you need someone with a medical background to ward off bad juju while on the river, I could be persuaded to stand around and I'm only a couple hours away in Klamath through the end of August. I could wipe backsides, empty foleys, ACLS, you know, all the stuff ICU nurses do. And I can fish and car...

Check out Charlie's Fly box for lots of patterns.

Sorry, I edited it.

Look for Del's Merkin in the fly box.

Re: what's a good stater redfish fly combo?

If you haven't already spent money on a lesson, do that first. Don't have any names for San Antonio area but maybe someone can pipe up.

If you still are interested after the lesson, ask your instructor to point you in a direction.

Re: Jetty setup

Don't spend anymore. Go with what you have. The sink tip should be fine. Unless you are going for really deep channels, in which case you should just use conventional. I've fished a 8wt sink tip in fresh water. It takes a little getting used to since you want to roll cast to get the line to the surf...

Good reference for fly fishing

http://www.headwaterbooks.com/books.php ... shing_Tips

Recently thumbing it again, it's got a lot of good info that answers newbie questions and a good reference to look back on after fishing for a while.

Re: Line Question - New Fly Fisher

Thanks for the tips. Is there any particular reason that I shouldn't just tie a loop knot or surgeons loop at the end of the fly line itself? Presentation. A big knot will make a splash. Do as TexasAg suggested to create a new loop at the end of your line with a couple nail knots to secure to loop....

Have you popped the spools off to see if there was a label for the line? Often times there's a spool sticker to label the line.

Re: Tonight's Score! So excited!! (got a question)

If it's that tight, shouldn't matter terribly cuz dapping may be the name of the game, but in small water, you'll want a light footprint that won't make a big splash.

I think I'm using a Rio Gold. Was great a couple weeks ago on Gore Creek.

Re: Newbie Advice

Dry flies are typically for freshwater trout and salmon.

You should be using subsurface or poppers, not really dries or wets.

Take a lesson. It's more than worth the money.

Practice, practice, practice.

I want to confirm that you are a dirty bastard, you need to stop drinking cheap beer and keep the photos coming. Looks like you are having a great time.

And what is this work thing you do, cuz my job has me cleaning lots of poop and scrubbing old balls?

Bigger concern would be what medical problems you have that would cause you to be immune-compromised or have difficulty healing, diabetes being the first that comes to mind.

You could probably step up a couple sizes for the 8wt. I'm pretty sure I throw a 4 or 6 on my 5wt.
