Re: Shark encounter SLP gvleston side flats 7/1

The only time I've worried about a shark was a huge hammerhead cruising along beside the kayak. I was bigger, but not by much. Wading I'm more worried about vibro, hardheads and stingrays than sharks. As far as wading in clear water, I'd much better the devil I can't see than the one I can. As far a...

Re: Two day trip = two new videos

Congrats on some serious fish. I took your reference to the location based on the beach and open gulf as a personal challenge. I used recorded radar to match the cloud formation behind you to time and direction. Then, with a screen shot of that cloud formation, corrected for camera distortion and su...

Re: Nice one

Nice one prof. I've been fairly agnostic about color. I kind of think it is fourth behind size, depth and speed. Actually I'd say fifth. If I fish the same four in the same location I'd still get out fished, at least according to my no 2 son.

Re: "Orange" fish sighting in Christmas Bay

Chupacabra fish. Be afraid, be very afraid. I saw a guy get eaten by a school of wild chupacabra fish. He was wading up in the LM about waist deep at midnight on a full moon. Before he could utter a word he just dropped straight down and disappeared, rod and all. I staved them off by doing the piran...

Now i'm really interested. I guess you were using a smaller jig for Pompano? Was this at the rigs or closer in?

Thanks

Re: Scuba-worthy water and more hungry fish

Nice video. Glad to see someone catching there. We only managed a small shark Friday. But you are correct. That water was very clear. My son was fishing a weighted ribbon. When we stopped at one point I could see it at the bottom. I guess we were in 25 feet or so at the time.
Thanks for the video.

Re: Reel Cleaning - Not that hard

My confusion is how much and where to use grease vs oil. Different sources tell me different things. Do you oil your drag washers? Some do, some don't!! The first time I broke my Abu Garcia down and cleaned it and got it greased and oiled up it sounded horrible. I had to take it apart and rinse it ...

Re: Reel Cleaning - Not that hard

Do you know if this reel uses dogs or an anti-reverse bearing? If it is a Shimano style dog the drive gear splits the dog. Sometimes the dog will not seat on the gear properly and the reel will grind. In this case the anti revers may work, may lock up the reel or may not work. Another thing to check...

Re: Late Report: Aransas Pass 7/07-7/16

Thanks for the report. We fished LHL on Monday evening and couldn't get our anchors to hold in the wind. We spent most of the time looking and, while I say plenty of birds and bait, we didn't get any takers. Glad you were able to find them.

Re: Reel Cleaning - Not that hard

I've been modifying and rebuilding old Penn reels for several years. There is a forum that deals specifically with reel maintenance, upgrade and modification. Just like what you can do to a car, you can do to a reel. Cut, chop and rebuild. I'm not sure we can post the site so if you want to look at ...

Re: Setting up a kayak for fishing offshore

I suspect high island has a higher percentage of calm days. Could be wrong but it has been my observation. Also, from the reports the reds are abundant closer to shore. I don't know anyone who fishes for reds in 12 to 20 feet of water down Corpus way. At least not from a kayak.

It was good to meet the both of you. I enjoyed watching you sail the TI in on Saturday. Daniel and I moved to the bay Sunday and Monday. We fought the wind and without our bay anchors it was tough to stay on the fish managed a few specs. Good luck on your trip with your dad.

I've heard that stingray is delicious. There has been a rumor for years that the scallops served in restaurants are often cookie cutter stingray. Whether true or not, I could care less. I made a pact early on that if the stingrays left me alone, I would not eat or kill them. I've lived judiciously ...

Re: Eating Mullet

I suspect taste is dependent on water quality and what they were eating as well as size. I've heard of people eating small jacks and say they taste ok. It may be that taste is hit or miss and more commonly miss.

What size were the mullet?
