That is a great looking boat TexasJim! I'm looking to do something similar and have been looking for a few months to find a very similar hull setup.

I cut and pasted into the wrong area, the fish finder is 12v and the motor is 24v. (corrected now)

Re: 5HP Outboard on a Kayak!

If I ever decide to power a kayak here in Texas (with the accompanying registration hurdles), I'd probably do it the same way with a 2 HP Yamaha or with a lightweight 3.5HP Nissan that I already have laying around. Won't be as stealthy as a trolling motor, but it sure was fun and it had unlimited r...

Re: Picking the right trolling motor

You are a wealth of knowledge Motoyak, thank you. I've ordered the Newport rig and Amped Outdoors battery. I'll also source the gear you suggested from Amazon. My hope is that it all arrives next week so I can install it after I return from when my business trip.

Re: Picking the right trolling motor

Ok, he has a Boni ss127 with a factory installed troller motor. He told me it a Newport Vessels NK180 which is 1.8 HP using 24 volts DC. The dealer told him it was about #60 thrust which is probably true. Now he weighs about #160 and I come in at #240. Of course he has 2 batteries which are lithium...

Re: Picking the right trolling motor

I've built several motoyaks using #30-#55 Minn Kota endura motors. I ditch the power coils by cutting the wires and just run the 2 heavy wires to the motor then control the speed with a PWM. This does 2 things, decreases the amperage draw considerably and allows for prop speed from just a few RPM t...

Re: Picking the right trolling motor

Waiting has become the new norm. I would get on a waiting list and wait it out if that's what you truly want. I don't know of another option for a kayak with GPS at least that's not 3 grand. I appreciate the response and will get on a list and wait. The upside is that it will force me to get into b...

Re: Texas vehicle registration for a kayak

I use the word never cautiously because never is a long time but I will never buy another trailer that doesn't have a current valid registration in the state of Texas. I am right there with you regarding the word "never" - with that said I'll never sell the trailer that I bought. It will ...

Picking the right trolling motor

Just picked up my new Bonafide SS127 and am in the process of sourcing gear to get it rigged out. The biggest challenge I'm having is finding a trolling motor. My preference is the MotorGuide Xi3-55SW 36" Kayak Motor - 12V - GPS - FOB which is the perfect one for my kayak. Yesterday I went thro...

Re: Texas vehicle registration for a kayak

The cautionary note here is that the process of first registering trailer as home-made are very different than a lot of people remember from years back. It's okay if you have the previous owner's registration and a bill of sale. But a lot of sellers advertise that they have no paperwork and you'll ...

Re: Texas vehicle registration for a kayak

Back in the 2000s I had a small cargo trailer for my remodeling business stolen from a storage facility on the north 610 loop in Houston. The facility was useless in helping me with the situation, thankfully I was well insured but the hassle of replacing everything was zero fun. That's interesting t...

Re: Texas vehicle registration for a kayak

Keep in mind the trailer is registered at the courthouse. If you bought your kayak new, you've already paid sales tax on it. Keep the receipt and you won't have to pay it again when you register it at TPWD. If you bought it 2nd hand, you'll need to report the price you paid and pay state sales tax ...

Re: Texas vehicle registration for a kayak

Kayaks and canoes of any length are exempt from registration requirements unless you power them, even with an electric motor. If you power them, they need TX numbers. None of mine are registered. It's not a vehicle registration that you get at the courthouse, it's done through TPWD. Make sure you g...

My thoughts exactly, it's a shame that we have to contend with thieves but sadly that's the world we live in.

I’m coming up on 60 years old and still love lugging the kayak around. I feel better after an outing in the kayak out on the water than at any other time in my life. My goal is to be in my Commander 140 when I’m 80, hopefully with a strong pulse. Maybe that kayak could be my coffin someday, seems f...

I have not picked up my Bonafide SS127 yet, but I now have a trailer. My plan is to add some sort of storage box above the kayak and also add an 8" sized PVC pipe as a rod holder. https://i.postimg.cc/1zbxSf3g/trailer-01.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/JhDgpM5R/trailer-02.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/dtN4...

It only took 9 years.

After joining TKF close to 9 years ago I've finally made the move and will be picking up a new Bonafide SS127 this coming week. I figured this would be an appropriate first post on here and am excited to get on the water. Over the years I've learned a ton from reading the TKF threads and look forwar...
