Re: Marine VHF on inland lakes and rivers?

Good luck with the Cobra radios. Lots of the BTB beginners tried them over the years, mainly because they are cheap. In salt water, at any rate, they are pretty much trash. In freshwater, kept dry, they might be ok.

If they are busting on top, walk the dog with a top water. My fave is the bone colored Spook, but others work.

Re: Rod float

It ain't pretty, but most of the BTB guys use a piece of pool noodle, or pipe insulation. Wrap it around the rod above the fore grip and use Velcro strips to secure.

Re: upcoming BTB trip???

I think you guys are worrying too much about sea sickness. In my 10+ years of BTB, I've made hundreds of trips, with multiple dozens of people, in all kinds of conditions, and I've only known a handful to get sick. The motion doesn't seem to affect people as much when you're down at water level in a...

I haven't fished below the dam in a couple of years, but from what I've heard from the regulars, the fishing isn't nearly what it used to be.

This time of year it's mainly all about the feeder creeks for spawners

Not trying to hijack your thread, but your talk of the retired USAF guy reminded me of a surf trip a few years ago. 80 year old Ray from Georgia stopped to see how I was doing. Come to find out he was making one last long road trip. Interesting guy - college professor, bank president and a half doze...

Getting rolled in the surf is for rookies and pikers. :D :D :D

Seriously, you haven't lived until you have a fully loaded Hobie PA 14 roll on top of you. Reporting for a friend.

Re: What just happened that there's half a dozen shrimp boats?

That's usually the time to get out your castnet and catch some shrimp. It's not unusual for the white shrimp to move in right next to the beach during the summer. The shrimpers will follow them as close as they can get.

Good job Billy. From the look of the surf and swell, you wanted to get out there a lot worse than I would have.

Great report. That's the area I live in. In fact, my house is within a mile of the Village Creek headwaters.

Looks like a great time...except for the dragging. :D

Congrats on catching a good weather window and catching some nice fish. I love snapper, but not enough to pedal 7.5 miles to catch them. LOL

Also, good job on noticing some promising structure and going back to check it out.

Re: BTB High Island slabs 10/08

Surprisingly tough day. Very clear water, no birds, no bait, very few fish. I caught the only 2 reds and only because a school blew up right next to me. Sharks were cooperating better...barely. I leadered 2, had one bite off and one come unhooked after 2 jumps and a 10 minute fight. I've never done ...

Y'all were apparently fishing too close to shore. The fish were biting out where I was. My final tally was 12 bull reds and a 5 ft blacktip.

HI Slabs 9/17 Report

I suspect a couple of videos will be forthcoming from this trip. I fished with Wolfman and Killerbee and it was an awesome day. Near perfect conditions and hungry fish. I ended the day with 16 bull reds boated and two 6 ft bull sharks. The other guys caught lots of fish, too, but I'll let them tell ...
