I Love KFC!

No not the Colonel’s Chick’n Kayak’n, Fish’n, Camp’n Went down to Goose Island State Park on the 3rd for a couple of nights and a day of kayaking and fishing. Caught a number of undersized on the fly a one 23” keeper. Had perfect weather and wind, everything you could ask for. I just wish there were...

Re: Christened my kayak

You can stand in these. I tried it on a trials trip quickie on the Guadalupe to make sure. That was one of my goals to ease my back and not have to get out in the mud. I will practice it some more before attempting it in the marsh. Maybe when I have some hard sandy bottom. Like anything it depends o...

Christened my kayak

Finally got my “new to me” Eddyline Caribbean 14 out to the coast for a test paddle and fishing trip. Went out last Thursday down by Port Lavaca. The winds finally calmed down so I decided to make a quick trip by myself and get all the rigging bugs worked out. Everything was calm and low grey clouds...

I have fished PC quite a bit and you put in some miles paddling. Nice job and nice report!
And the meal looked pretty darn good as well.
Thanks!

Thanks for the report. It’s been awhile since I have fished there, I have been wanting to explore more.
Your boat still looks good slimed up! :) It looks like it is holding up nicely. I’m still drooling!

Nice! I thought the water would be way too muddy from all the rain.
And ya keep rubbing that beautiful kayak in my face! :D

Re: Rod float

Thanks y’all and those were all my thoughts as well. Except I hadn’t thought about the floating line aspect, except any time I have come close was after landing a fish and was wrestling around with it in the boat. I guess I will change my M.O. some, like being more careful!

Rod float

I know this is a long shot but I thought I would ask. I had a senior/ mid-mid-mid life crisis moment and bought a rather expensive new fly reel and if I ever dropped it over board I would not come up until I found it! Has anyone found a float of some kind that works with fly rods and casting? I have...

Re: LHL with new ride.

Thanks for the fishing report. And thanks for the Kayak review! I have been drooling over one of those for a couple of years now. So it is standup able ? Did you have to special order it and how long did it take them to get it in? They seem pretty unobtainable. And I always wanted to see one in pers...

Re: Tandem kayak suggestion for bay fishing

My wife and I paddled a tandem for years and loved it. It was a sit in so when we moved here it didn’t get much use so we sold it. Lately I have been contemplating getting another and the one that has caught my eye is the Crescent Crew. Reports show that it has all the attributes you would want and ...

Re: Standing and fishing

This is the first thread I've read that has approached the subject of, 'the irony of todays kayaking'. My past statements were perhaps overly subtle as I gave my opinion concerning the kayak phenomenon. I began kayaking in 1948 at a summer camp in Wisconsin. Water sports was the themed activity. Th...

Re: Standing and fishing

I really like this guy and his reviews. Plus he knows how to paddle. I don’t necessarily like big box stores but he tells it like it is and if someone wants an inexpensive kayak this is good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ib2u6KiZ6P8 I always laugh at the advertising of these grande "kayaks&q...

Re: Advise on purchasing a Kayak

I’ve been doing the same thing, but not anywhere near my first kayak. I used to lean toward the F12 but decided and heard that it was a real beast. Now I’m leaning toward Crescent Kayaks, either their CK1 or Crew, the new Shoalie (sp?) is getting good reviews too but I like a more open deck.

Re: Standing and fishing

Well I didn’t plan on this topic being about Kayak but I guess it all hand in hand. And I get it, if you can stand and fish you do (maybe just occasionally) and if you can’t, you don’t. I have always joked that what I want is a kayak that is fast, stable enough to stand up, capable of river running ...

Re: Standing and fishing

For standing I love my Kaku Voodoo. Wide open flat deck and the chair sits up much higher than other kayaks. You can also sit on the back of the chair as well, which is pretty close to standing. I looked at one of those at an ACK demo. I wondered how they paddled in chop and swells in the bays. And...

Re: Standing and fishing

Thanks everyone. I knew I would get replies from all across the board. For what is is worth, I was a gymnast most of my life up to college and some coaching afterwards so balance usually is not an issue. I had a fusion in my neck about 30 years ago (probably landed on my head one too many times) so ...

Standing and fishing

Hey Y’all! I’ve been silently in the background for over a year now since I had a series of back surgeries ending with a lumbar fusion. My doc at one time said that kayaking would probably be the last thing I can do but I think I’m ready to give it a try. I remember before that after hours in the bo...

Re: Austin Canoe & Kayak Sold?

Actually the one in Austin was better attended by all the brands, with demonstrations etc. If you look back at their videos of the demos most were filmed at that location. I worked the demos for my companies for many years. I would do Austin one day and San Marcos the next. There was a marked differ...

Re: Austin Canoe & Kayak Sold?

“Not able to accept exchanges or returns “ that’s interesting. I know ACK did get a “retailer of the year” award once but I personally know of several stores that would paddle circles around them in all aspect of retail. But they are in other states. ACK was still primarily an online business, the s...

Re: Austin Canoe & Kayak Sold?

No doubt retail is hard and it has only been getting harder. As a “manufacturers representative “ in the outdoor industry 27 years I still have a strong feeling for brick and mortar retailers, especially independently owned ones. But I too dislike going into a store and not finding even the basics. ...

Re: Austin Canoe & Kayak Sold?

Wow. I was kind of wondering when this was going to happen. I used to sell a lot of product to ACK for decades when the Messena’s owned it. They sold (or merged was the story) and Steve “retired” shortly after I did. I could see it go downhill rapidly there after. Unfortunately this is just another ...

Fly Tying Bobbin

OK all you fly tiers I know this is going to have many different personal preferences, but I guess that is what I am asking for. I am in the need for some new bobbins. All the newish trout flies use different colors of threads per fly and it takes too long to swap threads. And my old el cheapo wire ...
