A buddy called me up one day about Swan Lake.
"Stepped over the grass and saw 200 6" tall redfish in 4" of water.
I was down there the next day.
Yep, you can't beat a day like that.

Those are Great photos.

The Kwik Taper is a Shakespeare.

I believe the brown glass may be Berkley (possibly Silaflex...).
And yes, those are spinning rods.

the smaller the fly the better - I fish size 6 and 8.
I recommend using a slime line (intermediate or neutral density) and counting down - and vary your count down - the fish start looking up and down in the water column to feed after you start striking them.

I've caught kings on 12-lb. (wire) tippet - I don't see any reason to go past 12-lb. mono tippet on reds.

I'm not even a fan of the 6' Fenwick (though many are), but I do love my Phillipsons (and not everything Bill Phillipson did was perfect, either, but his glass tapers have sure stood the test of time). Most of the modern glass makers are trying to turn glass into either an even-lighter ultralight gr...

I would hardly call choosing to fish with cane or glass rods a craze. In most of the water I fish, distance is measured by how many fish your line puts down. The craze is the marketing hype from reinventing and trying to sell us new and higher-tech wheels every year. The qualities in a rod that make...

coldwater/freshwater floater (you may need it in Alaska someday)
saltwater floater
slime line (intermediate or neutral density sinker - Airflo is my favorite)
Teeny TS 250 sinking line (which I find to be a much more fishable line than a 300-grain sinking head)

that reel may be a Young Micro...dex? But it looks bigger than that to me - I believe it is a 2" JAF Avon, and it should have a (very nice) click pawl. J Austin Forbes had all their parts machined by JW Young in Redditch, and I believe they bought out all the Young parts inventory when the line...

Kendall county is another one. They have withdrawn the public right-of-way from every county road that follows/crosses the Guadalupe River. 7 crossings from Waring to Sisterdale were taken away from us. The right-of-way and bridges are fenced. If you park along the roads or try to access the river, ...

I tried from the local game warden, sheriff up to the Attorney General to report an illegal barbed-wire fence across a navigable run in the Sabinal. It was the most-amazing runaround and buck-passing I've ever seen. Everyone agrees it was illegal - no one will claim the authority to do anything abou...

they are a viable subspecies - just not in Texas.
New Mexico, and local TU chapters there are making great strides in restoring them to upper drainages and their native water.

no question there are trout above Canyon Lake. I caught this one at the convergence of the Guadalupe forks last summer - late June. Didn't have a net - I was fishing for Guadalupe bass http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/decoy/fish/chunt011.jpg I released it - obviously don't know how...

I would love to get my hands on these to tinker, but I believe the Ti-max has the Powell reel seat while the XL has a pac-bay seat on the trout rods. But also, if they're making short length rods, "high resin content" they're thinking about the engineering of the taper and blending the mat...

well, mine (hers) was bought in 1983, and is serialized and handmade in the US. And it's IM6 graphite (emerald green blank) and really compares to the old Winstons (it was half the price of a Winston then). I will say it also has one of the nicest ferrule designs I have ever seen - it's somewhere in...

Powell has certainly been making fly rods awhile - since 1910, in Chico, CA. Press Powell is the third generation, Walton his dad, and E.C. his grandad. They machined the first good uplocking reel seat and, IMO, it's still the best design ever. I have one of their trout rods - or rather, my daughter...

got one even bigger late last week, on a size 20 BWO nymph in the bottom of a chute.
