Action/Power for Topwater Spooks in Bays

Post by PoppingCorkDamian »

Hey Fellas, finally getting more time to get back on the water with the kayak and wade the lower Laguna Madre. I have been updating my rod and reel setups ( all spinning ) and looking into getting a rod that I will specifically use for topwater ( Spooks ). I've always enjoyed using a popping cork with live shrimp but lately started to use more lures and topwater. I got my Popping Cork setup, Lure setup, Bottom rod setup, and now I want to add a Topwater setup. Wanted to get any advice or insight on what yall use for topwater, specifically the action/power? Any rod recommendations would be appreciated as well.

Thank You & Tight Lines!

I prefer baitcasting rods for topwaters; 6'6" to 6'9". If you throw braid go with with a medium fast action. If you spool up with mono or coploymer go with a fast action rod. If you are throwing the original size Spook, then you'll want a medium powered rod capable of handling 3/4 oz baits. If you plan to throw Spook Jrs. you can get away with medium light power rod.

My two baitcaster setups, both are spooled with 12lbs P-line CX Premium:
Waterloo Slam Mag; 6' 8"; 1/4 - 3/4 oz; 8-17 lbs; Medium Power; Fast Action w/ Lews BB2 Inshore
Waterloo Salinity; 6' 6"; 1/8 - 1/2 oz; 6 - 12 lbs; Medium Light Power; Moderate-Fast Action w/ Lews Inshore Speed Spool

I mostly throw Spook Jrs occasionally a She Pup or smaller Skitterwalk.

Hooked on Tackle in Clute had a 20% off sale the other day and while I need another skitterwalk like I need another hole in my head I couldn’t resist picking up these custom paint job tops.

I did rather recently pick up an old japanese made Greenie Curado, circa 2000 and in excellent condition, at an estate sale for $75. I use that reel spooled with 14# Trilene XL and an ancient early 1990s Allstar rod for my tops and tails set up.

My other tops and tails rod and reels is this Waterloo and more modern shimano strung with braid.
