Reel service?
Reel service?
Can you recommend a place to service the following reels:
• Shimano Torium 30
• Accurate Boss Magnum 665H Narrow
• Avet MXL 6/4 2-speed
• Avet JX Raptor 6/3-MC 2-speed
• Avet HX 5/2 2-speed
I'm in Missouri City and looking for an alternative to sending the Avets to the factory for servicing.
I've located the following places, but have no experience with them:
Anglers Anonymous
Tackle Hut
Serious Tackle
I won't use Fishing Tackle Unlimited and have plenty of time.
Thanks,
Dave

Re: Reel service?
Dave, I have time on my hands and would be glad to service your reels for you. I recently totally dismantled and serviced my cousin's favorite reel and only had two parts left over. They were very small parts.
Re: Reel service?
In case you need another option, I have had good service from Fishing Tackle Unlimited on Katy freeway, they recently redid old Shimano stradic from the 90's for me and its like butter now.
Re: Reel service?
Normally, I do my own, but I stripped a screw one time, so I took the Shimano Curado to FTU before. They are okay, but they took months and I had to call them to continually get an update. Another time, I broke a screw off, and I took it in to FTU and they removed the screw right then for no charge, so that was great. So, they were hit or miss.
More recently, I did not have time to do my own, so I took my Shimano SLX DC to Anglers Anonymous in Katy and they were fantastic. Highly recommended. My reel was done in a week and it was perfect when I got it back. $35 was the charge since I did not need any parts replaced. https://www.facebook.com/anglersanonymoustx/ or https://anglersanonymoustx.com/

Re: Reel service?
Anglers Anonymous doesn't service reels the size I have.
The owner suggested Fishing Tackle Unlimited, David’s Tackle Box in Rosenberg or Serious Tackle in La Marque.

Re: Reel service?
Follow up. David's Tackle did a fine job on my tuna reels.
Now I started to service my Shimano Aldebaran and stripped a screw. I'll be taking it to Angler's Anonymous soon.

Re: Reel service?
My son in law worked on my Shimano Chronarch baitcasting reel, did a nice job.
I picked up an old turn of the century Curado at an estate sale for $75. It needed some oil and I was able to manage that simple service on my own, but otherwise the reel was in great shape. I don’t think it ever got used in saltwater. Casts a mile.
My other two baitcasting reels are Lew’s. Custom Pro second generation which was an early 2024 Christmas present to myself and a Tournament Pro.
Cannot remember the last time I had four low profile baitcasting reels all in top form.
There was a reel service maybe a decade or more ago in Lake Jackson that I used one time. Cost $70 and really didn’t make much of an improvement.
I haven’t gone by Hooked on Tackle in Clute since they moved up Dixie Drive, but I bet they’d know someone that does reel servicing. Albert that works in there is a kayaker as I understand. My friend said he has a YouTube channel. Hooked on Tackle builds rods and stocks more good soft plastics than our Academy here in town.

Re: Reel service?
I've used tackle hut in Houston and FTU. Tackle hut was cheaper and much quicker than FTU. The guy running the shop at tackle hut really knew his stuff. It was an inconvenience to drive out there for me but I'd do it again just based on his honesty, price, and turnaround. FTU was ok but I had to follow up, they blew there timeline and the kicker was that they told me my reels were ready when they weren't. I drove from Galveston and only one of the two were ready.

After discovering Tackle Hut in Houston (and just horrific experience at FTU), I'll never use anyone else. What a great guy running that show - incredibly knowledgeable and personable.
