When the low tides throw you a lemon, make that thing into lemonade

Post by Prof. Salt »

I launched before daylight and paddled towards my usual fishing area, but the tides had dumped out so far that a mile up I ran into mud. My channel was so shallow that at one point it was mud ALL the way across... my kayak goes pretty shallow but it does need a little water to get through. I turned around, mumbling about having to paddle a LONG way to get to my area now, but on the way I slowed down and waited for daylight to check a new stretch of shoreline. Thank goodness I did, because within 45 minutes I had a limit of fish and was headed back to the truck without being worn out. Single fish were crawling along mud banks very quietly, but I was able to spot a few bronze backs and put the sneak on them. The new shrimp fly pattern I developed this week worked really well, and since the winds were so still I had decided to fish the version without a rattle. It was the right call and fish were smashing the little fly. I managed to retrieve it from a few fish without getting my fingers mangled by crush plates, and now I've got fresh fillets for my secretary at work. Oh, and I only had to paddle about 4 miles total, which is about 11 fewer than I thought I'd have to paddle.

What exquisite Redfish and fish-flies, Professor... . Thanks for sharing.

Always a pleasure to hear from the learned members of our fishing academy.
