yak out baits
when you yak out baits, what size pole do you use, just your BTB pole?

Your question is a bit confusing, but I'll try to answer. When yakking a bait out off the beach, you put your pole in a rod holder on the beach. Put the reel in freespool, with the clicker on. Then you put the bait in the yak (however you do that....I have a snap clip, that I clip to the wieght, and leave the bait to float under the water.) Then you paddle out to where you want your bait, and drop it. Paddle back to the beach, reel in any excess line, sit in the shade, and work on a beverage while waiting for the clicker to sound off................ Hope that helps...

Re: yak out baits
i understand how it works, but how long of a pole do you need, a 7 ft or 10
Re: yak out baits
taller pole will help keep the line out of water and keep grass off it.. but I personally like a small boat rod for sharkin from the beach more leverage on the shark.. Use whatever you hvae and enjoy yourself..
Re: yak out baits
When surf fishing lately I've been using two surf rods. My BTB rod 6.5 footer and a AR 10 foot Academy special.
Not to highjack the thread but maybe this will add to the conversation.
Do you always use a sinker? I guess it's impossible to free line a fish head or crab (like BTB fishing) as it would drift back in and down the beach, correct? Is possible to float the bait near the surface with a balloon or float?

Re: yak out baits
Like Robul said, the longer the pole, the higher you line is. This helps with the line rubbing on the bars, and weed, etc. However, the longer the pole, the the leverage goes to the fish. Most typical surf fisherman will use a 10' or 12' rod. The guys who are targeting sharks usually want a shorter rod, (a 7' rod rated for 50# class line for example) so that they have more leverage. Ultimately it comes down to preferance.

Re: yak out baits
I started using the shorter boat rods, but lately I've been using my 10-12ft surf rods. I've heard that you lose some leverage using the longer rods, but it's easier to keep your line out of the weed and such. I guess it comes down to personal preference. I like having my rod tips up high.
A couple of times I've paddled out to my spot only to realize that I forgot to put a sinker on. The conditions were decent and both times I caught sharks. I dont' know if anyone goes weightless on purpose or not, but it's doable.

It may be do-able on occasion, but your going to need a weight most of the time.....I'd start with a 6 oz. spider weight most of the time...

Sure you can.......that's where I'd start, using the gear I had. You can always upgrade later.....

Re: yak out baits
i have a 7 ft berkley big game rod, with a penn 309, im glad this will work
Re: yak out baits
I use a MHeavy Tiger stick at 7" that I use with the Penn 309. It is a little overkill for BTB, and a little underkill for Surf. I use them for both. I've added a few larger reels, but I planned my BTB and Surf fishing to use both rod/reel combos.
Now that being said I have recently purchased a 10' with a 6/0 wide. SO I guess the 6.5-7' poles will work just fine, use what you have until the bug drives you to specialize your gear.

You should do fine with the 309....it's a workhorse that has put lot's of fish on the beach. I guess your figuring out that there are lot of options in the sport.

Like Chazbo said...10' to 12' rods.
6oz to 8 oz weights depending on current.
If I ever fish the surf, I will switch out my BTB reels and stick em on the surf rods.
You can get the American Rodsmith surf rods at Academy for around $60.

Re: yak out baits
the combo's i use to surf fish with are penn 6/0 on a 12 ft rod, a penn 555 on a 10 ft rod, and a daiwa 30 shv on a 11-9 breakaway. and will run them out at different distances from the beach. i use 8 0z spider weights and sometimes more. if the conditions r good i'll put the 6/0 on a boat rod. yes u can put a bait on top. but u need to bring ure anchor and bouy out and get it back later. u can even freeline using a surf rod and anchor , cliping live bait to run along the line attached to a second rod. if the weed is bad ill put the rods up high in the truck bed or trailer the higher the better but u stll have to watch them and clean them occasionaly or they will break free. one more note u guys using the smaller reels if u hook a good fish u better have enough line left on the reel to wear it down or turn it. and dont tie a good knot at the end of the reel. if u r out of line and its still pulling hard hang on tight
