I've been happpy with Penns, Shimano Baitcaster and Daiwa Emcast.

I have a couple of big Bass Pro spinners that work great and were very affordable, if he doesn't want to start out too expensive.

1. Penn 704 or 706Z - these are old school Penn spinners that can take a hell of a beating and hold a bunch of line. I wouldn't use braid on these. You should be able to snag one on E-bay.
2. Penn Spinfisher 7500 - Great reel, built like a tank. Cheap.
3. Shimano Baitrunner 4500.

Like with most Penn reels nowdays, be sure and check the country of manufacture. I think most, if not all, of the new Penn spinners are made in China.

Why not just start him out right with a conventional reel? Take a couple of evenings and teach him how to cast one, and he'll never look back.

Not on your list but I have been using these Salt Striker reels from Cabelas for 4 yrs now. More reliable and less failures (none) than any I have used (even pricier ones)

My Penn 750 is about thirty years old and still huntin fish. What ever reel you choose, get one of Breakaway tackle's rocket launchers for casting. Takes alot of strain off your release fingers.

I have fished a large Okuma for the 6 years with no issue using 40lb braid. But, I'm fairly new here and any reel thats hunting after 30 years would be a good recommendation in anyone's book.

And just my .02: Cheap equipment fails when you need it to not. Learned that lesson the hard way with an 8 ft shark and a tarpon I never saw up close (only aerials). Same trip.
