Do you use scupper plugs or not?

While cleaning my T140 I noticed while I had it upside down that the scuppers under the seat are plugged from the factory. I'm going to remove them so the "seat well" will be self bailing like the rest of the yak unless somebody can tell me why it's better to leave them plugged.

I'm also wondering what is the thought proccess of plugging the scupper holes in the first place?

I only plug the two scupper holes "in my seat" since my SPTW has a deep seating depth of 7.25" which gives me a very low center of gravity. All the other scupper holes in my footwells and tankwell are open.

All mine are open, I may try out putting some in but summer is coming so that will have to wait till next winter.

I have a T140 and at 190# I always utilize scupper plugs, w/out em the cockpit wasnt self bailing, it was self filling ..always had water in the cockpit..course my yak is the older 140 model...

I made my plugs for my cobra navigator out of green nerf balls.. work great and the ride is dry..

I've never heard anyone else say this, but when I plugged the scuppers on my t140 (older) I would swear it seemed less stable. Could the water in the cockpit help stabilize things somewhat?

I wouldnt think the scupper plugs in or out would affect stability unless it was full of water.I had a ride 135 now I have a hobie quest,I always use scupper plugs in both.If its really choppy I pull them,other than thay I dont see the point in setting in water

I guess being 5'2" and 150 LB isn't enought to keep me sitting in water, sometimes water will come up a little bit but then goes right back out.

Finally an advantage for the small guy, cause it sucks not being able to reach the top shelf in the kitchen without something to climb on.

Sorry but its a watersport, your going to get wet, your going to have fun and its all good. No scuppers here.

Thats a shoalwater? I thought you said a dry ride?

I use scuppers because I don't get enought water in my yak from a normal day of fish to need it to be self bailing. And I stand up and sight cast to bass and water would come up under the seat while I was standing up. If I fished salt in my yak it might be a different story.

I don't ever really plug up the scuppers. Never had any water come through there unless I am standing up in it.

When I 1st got my T140 the first few trips out I pluged the scupper holes. Since then I haven't bothered and I've never had any problems with water. Glad I didn't buy the expensive plugs just used the foam balls would have been a waste of money. Tight lines.

It's not water...the trip we made on Sunday...without plugs in the seat well...you would have been sitting in 2" of
baby goo mud all day long...if you have to do the mud hump...skateboard..or 4wheel...it squeezes up the scupper holes like play-do and ends up under the seat..then squeezes out all over the yak....the 2 in the tank well keep your gear dry...

It's also funny to see some of the comments...really tells me where everyone has been fishing... or what part of the coast you are from..

I'll be honest... I rarely think of my plugs.... i just head out. Maybe I should start, but I really haven't had any problems. Maybe its my inexperience but my x13 handles well and we wade 95% of the time, so we're usually all wet anyway.

On my last kayak, I used yellow foam practice golf balls sometimes, but in the Summer I turned on my water cooled seat air conditioning.

On my old yak I only used scupper plugs to fix a leak in one of them. My search I only use the ones under the seat as it seems to keep my butt a little dry. I only have them cause they came free with my yak.

I use the foam golf balls because I'm a big guy and the little center hatch on my Ride 135 leaks. I got tired of buying new AA batteries and rewiring my depth finder after every trip.

Haven't made my first mud runs of the year (Might in the Morning, just ain't decided north of Halls or South to Freeport ) but I really don't mind the mud, that first class seat in my Magic keeps the mud from my butt just fine

Seat and tankwell all the time. I've been floating with the cockpit scuppers plugged lately, but I can't really say why .
