Joseph caught his 1st Blue....

Post by Do It »

Crab today....we had to make a trip to CC this weekend but couldn't take the yaks and didn't even grab the poles. This really wasn't a problem as the weather and wind probably would have kept us off the water anyway.
We had some time this afternoon and Joe had gotten the idea of going crabing from somewhere so off to Academy we went :D . I haven't been crabing in 20+ years so after checking out a few locations that didn't pan out for various reasons we ended up at the Packery channel boat ramp. As soon as we got started the weather got nasty, the drizzle turned to a sideways (wind) light rain but Joseph scored his first Blue Crab and was very excited.
Sent this pic to his Mom and she text back saying " that's cool but he looks miserable out there in that weather.

I asked him to show his Mom how you feel out here and snapped this pic in response to here remark.

We caught a couple more but they were females with sponges so we had to let them go. By this time the water is soaking through my jacket and my shorts are wet so I called it and told him we had to go. He decided to let the lone crab go and said we would tear 'em up next time.
He loves the outdoors no matter no matter what it throws at him.

Crabbing is how my late dad introduced me to saltwater fishing. :D It was at Ocean City, Maryland. From there, I graduated to flounder, striped bass, bluefish and porgies. Crabbing is so easy and so good eating too. We'd always catch at least 4 dozen every time we after them. For me, saltwater fishing and crabbing has that special "zing". 8)

Golden! That's a post I can't believe I missed.

OK--so now, I want to go crabbing too. Tell Joseph we got to get the plan in action for a trip to the coast. He gets to show me how it works.

There is alot of ways to crab the best I think is chicken neck's tied to a string. You can get the nets on a long pole cheap at Academy etc.. I like to tie say 6 ft line( twine) to a old broom stick stick it in the first cut on beach or bay. Put about 2 or 3 out this way. A small weight helps but not needed we use to use old spark plugs.Wait and every 10 min or so pull the line in slow the crab will hold on to the chicken neck. Slide the net real slow out and under crab and lift net. This is fun then take them home put news paper on deck. Boil those suckers throw them on the deck and feast. You know I have not done that in a long time think I will make that one of my summer treat's this year...

We got the round crab nets at Academy they're around $1.50 ea. and a spool of poly twine. Tie what ever length you need to get your net to the bottom and as LLS said I tied some chiken necks in the center of the net. We picked up some limestone rocks from the rip rap at the dock and used that as weight. Tose 'em out, let 'em sink and sit for a few minutes then pull them up and see if you have a crab. There are a few regulations as far as size and you can't keep females with the sponge (eggs) and you have to have a fishing license with SW stamp. Bring home and boil them up.
