When's the season over ?

Post by eightweight »

Been fishing the Texas coast a few years now, mostly fly fishing. October was, well, spectacular, as October always seems to be. Redfish tailing in the grass in the early morning, hungry redfish. Shrimp and crab everywhere. But now it's November. Cold fronts. Turtle grass is fading. Duck hunting season. Airboats. Not a good time to be in a yak in the marsh at dawn. How do you adjust? Fish later in the day, fish another place?

When's the season over ? Is it ever ?

Its never OVER, just adjust your style and locations. Try it you will like it. But fly fishing might be a style that will be V E R Y slow. Good Luck

It just depends on what you're targeting. Blue crab season is coming to an end. Once the water temperature starts dropping, the crabs will vacate to deeper water or some will bury themselves in the mud waiting for the warmer waters of Spring. Spanish mackerel will head for warmer water offshore which is beyond paddling distance. Most of the flounder will migrate to the Gulf to spawn. This is why I generally put my yak into drydock until the warmer waters of Spring arrive.

Winter time is the time to hunt your once in a life time trout.I learned that last year, you may not catch as many but the ones you catch are pigs.

New Year's Eve last year yielded me a 28" Fat Trout. I awoke many winter mornings to ice on my windshield as i warmed up the ole truck and loaded my kayak. :D Less boat traffic in the winter
