Tandem (The Mako)

Post by bowgarguide »

How would the speed(efficiency) compare on a 20 ft boat with two good paddlers to a 15 ft boat with one good paddler ,same hull design and close to the same width?
On the paddlers ( the engine) would be the same guys.

There wouldn't be much comparison. Even if both boats were equally efficient for their design the long boat with two paddlers would easily leave the shorter solo boat behind. Length equals potential speed. A matter of physics. Two paddlers is twice as much power (bigger engine).

Even if you take two exact boats except one solo, one tandem--the tandem would go faster. In this case it's not the length but the bigger engine (two paddlers).

Take a tandem 16' boat against a similar 20' solo boat and the solo boat should be faster.

So...a bigger motor means a little bit faster for that length, but the length is what really dictates the potential top speed. The hull shape and width dictates the efficiency of that design.

Interesting question, I would compare a usca c-1 and c-2 for your answer.
C-2 is 18'6, c-1 is 18', speed is pretty close. I'm pretty sure the 15 solo would be slower.

Darrel and I fish together a lot and do some rough miles and dragging our boats .
We fish from the bank most of the time and use the yaks to get there and back , this might have some possibility    Like where we fish below the Falls just one boat to drag and you could spell off
so half the walking in the water and just one boat to load and unload

True. This is because we're talking about boats of similar length. The tandem will have more power, but the solo c-1 is usually more efficient which keeps them close. A 15' boat would fall behind simply because of the hydrodynamics of the hulls.

It takes years to learn how to paddle a j201, or j193.

Darrel and I paddle a lot of miles side by side and we are pretty well matched. Also we get along great so I dont see that being a problem.
When you have fished and hunted with some one for several years you get to know them pretty well.

Yep. They don't call them "divorce boats" for nothing.

I know what you are talking about.
You know me I do a lot of thinking outside the box on my boats. . Here is my take on this boat.
I have paddled a lot of canoes tandem before so this want be new to me,I dont know about Darrel.
Second Darrel and I have hunted fished and traveled together for the last couple years and never a cross word , the only problem we have is making a decision we both are pretty flexible and both put out more than our share.
I need a tandem just in case I want to take a good looking lady for a ride ,figure I am going to be the only one paddling anyway in that scenario.
Last but not least my Duck has a full 16 ft water line which makes it equal to a 17.1/2 or 18 ft boat with normal bow and stern I have no problem paddling it solo , I think I can handle this one solo also
The reason this tandem might just fit our bill. We like to cover some country on the Brazos and then normally camp and fish from there ,so getting there fast and easy will be a benefit. Second portaging a boat or lining one it will cut the time pulling a boat in half let one guy pull while the other walks on dry land and certain places like below the Falls this will really be a plus since Darrel and I both have knees that have been blown out.
We camp alike so we can trim our gear even more sharing stoves coolers grills etc.
And one of the main reasons ,we both like to chase big cats and gar
Transporting a record gator gar back to certified scales is a problem in a yak or a cat that weighs over 50 lbs with a 14 ft open cockpit that should be doable
So I am going to build this one 19 ft 10 inches long 30 inches wide movable thwarts, short decks . SS@G WRC 60 lbs target weight
YEAAAAAAAAAAAA I think she will work.
Ron
And as normal there will be a couple of twist that are different on this boat

I like this idea and think is a great idea and very doable. It should raise our effiecency a notch ot two.

Matt at Jems told me he would have this ready after Christmas , so the T-V will have to wait and with Darrel building the Northwind I am going to wait and see how he likes his. Dang had to stretch my shop 4 more feet for this 20 ft long boat.

Went and shopped for wood today and bought enough for the Mako .
The bottom hull will be 1 1/2 inch strips and the decks will be 3/4
Should have a little wood left over ,118.00 worth Of cedar not bad for this big a boat.
