Sam,

Have to check a few things and get a fresher weather report. I do not intend to do but one trip in this heat. But I will bet there will be another Colorado trip coming soon. :D

I have bought tickets for Germany at Christmas so need to save a bit of cash to play. My son should be back there from Iraq by then so spending a week with his family and then a week with my inlaws and at the Christmas markets in Nuernberg. A new hobby and toys are a bit further down the agenda. :)

Paul, David, and I ran the section from Spencer's to Staples Dam this afternoon.......

I'm sure someone will post a pic or two when they get back home Sunday, but it was a nice paddle with a few fish caught.

The water is pretty low in places, but I'm just thankful we still have some here.

Oh...and, the sun is still hot.

David and I got down to the campground shortly after noon Friday and quickly unloaded the camp gear leaving it to be set up when things got cooler. Jerry (Saffra) who lives locally showed up shortly afterwards and we got on the water. Fishing our way down we floated 5 miles down from the campsite in Martindale. Catching a few bass and a bream we pulled out the time the sun was setting. Back at camp we visited a bit with with Jerry before he headed home for the night. David and I set camp and as I was heating some jumbalaya Linda (Yaktipper) drove in. We ate dinner and cleaned up. Then Doug (Imamoder) and Michelle dropped by and visited until dark. About 9:30 it seemed a good idea to sit in the river and soak the day (and the sweat away) lowering out core temps before bed. Getting out at 10:10 we were ready for bed shortly. With the O2 Cool fans and the soak we slept comfortably.

Up Saturday morning a cold breakfast and hot tea got us started. We decided to forgo fishing for a run full of rapids that normally resulting in turnovers and lost rods. Putting in at Old River Road we floated down to Martindale and the campground totalling 9 1/2 miles. Because the water was down it was tamed a bit but still floatable. David and Jerry also said the rapids were changed, and at times made worse by exposed rocks. It was a fun and enjoyable day marked with several stops to cool in the mid to upper 70 degree water.Trucks recovered Jerry stopped and picked up his wife, Lee Ann and we visited at the landing a while before they departed and we started dimmer. Bratwurst cooked in beer, hot German potato salad and Bushes grillin beans.

The before bed soak had been so good we had to repeat it before bed again. Sunday morning was a liesurely breakfast and packing before heading back to prepare for work tomorrow at 10:00.

This huge cypress in the middle of the river was as large as a small room with room for several people in the crotch. About 12' up was a very neatly looking wood burned sign announcing it was, "The Murray Jones Drinking Tree". :)

Looks like y'all had a great trip! Wish I could've made it but me and the GF had a good time hanging with the hippies at Grooveland :D I still haven't made a trip down the San Marcos and I think, after looking at the pics, that it is something I need to do ASAP! That big oak in the middle of the river really put a smile on my face. It looks like a cool place to hang out :D Good pics, good report. Thanks for sharing :D

We had a great time........the Saturday run through the rapids was still a little challenging for me, even at low flow.....got a couple of new gashes in the hull, but nothing major.

As we were approaching Cummings Dam, in the distance we could hear music, and I figured someone had their car radio going behind the dam. Lo and behold, we reached the dam, and there was an Elvis impersonator performing in the backyard of the house on the hill! The group decided this was a great spot for lunch, so we stuck around to be serenaded by Elvis for a while......ya never know what you're gonna see on this river!

It was a great weekend with good folks, good paddlin', lots of birds, awesome scenery, and yes.........ELVIS!!!

Yeah, seeing "Elvis" up there on the hill was pretty cool.....polyester suit w/cape, and it felt like 110 degrees out there

Robert, I'm sorry you missed this one, and Larry, I was hoping to get to meet you this go-round......maybe next time :D

Elvis singing on a hillside by the San Marcos... that has got to have been one of the funniest/coolest sights ever seen. I'll bet y'all weren't expect that

Yeah, I wish I could have made it. Being the last weekend before school started my wife wanted to take a trip to Houston to visit my brother and his family.
I did get to go surf fishing in Galveston. Really can't believe I went out into the surf as scared of sharks as I am.

A great time it was.

I have to give Paul a big thanks, my truck was broke down and he came by and picked up my boat.
And Jerry, he offered to come get me if I couldn't get there.

The river does look different with the low water. Enjoyed seeing the section below the park, I haven't been through there in years. Found a few fish on the long rod.

Image

And a little largemouth
Image

We spent plenty of time in the water, the best way to stay cool.
Mrs. Fajitas agrees-
Image

On Sat. we did what I call the "adventure trip". Wasn't quite as much adventure as other years.
The river is at about half the normal flow, alot better than some of the central Texas rivers.
Gage wasn't reading much.
Image

The gang coming in to Cummins Dam.
Image
And yes, there was an Elvis sighting near the dam. White cape and all.

A few tubers were out, but not bad. It can get ugly out there.
Image

As I was sitting in that eddy I saw one of those waterproof cigarette boxes just floating there. I opened it up and it had a couples driver licenses, bank cards, cash and probably most important to a smoker - cigarettes. Paul hollared out the womans name and they were surprise when I held it up. Apparently they didn't know it was missing.

Linda coming through-
Image

Image

Since this is the adventure run, I didn't bring a rod. I should have since I didn't flip the boat this time.
But I did catch a fish.
Image
Jerry let me take a few cast. Matter of fact, he told me that fish would be there too. Thanks Jerry.

Martindale Dam, only about a mile to go.
Image

It was good to see everybody again.
Thanks for everything.

I'd love to claim some "guru" status for that, but in all honesty.......

On the San Marcos, if there's a Cypress tree, you can pretty much guarantee there's a bass lurking underneath it :D
